2011 Singing News Fan Awards Top Ten Predictions

Join me in welcoming The Garms Family for their first postβ€”with, as requested by a number of us, views from the Lil’ Adventurers, too! – Daniel

Have you all voted for your favorite artists in the Singing News Fan Awards yet?

Sam, Jayme, Caleb, and I (Taylor) sat down together to predict the Singing News Fan Awards Top Ten Nominations, and as you might suspect, it turned into quite a lively conversation with their “little” opinions!

We examined several years of past nominations, considering everyone’s favorites…and we also added our own personal opinions. “I keep thinking Booth Brothers, Booth Brothers, Booth Brothers,” Sam said as we started, and with the Booth Brothers being their favorite trio, all three quickly suggested each member for nomination in applicable categories. πŸ™‚ (They even tried to squeeze Michael Booth into Favorite Female Singer!) All Booth Brothers, Legacy Five, and Greater Vision nominations were unanamious votes. As we went along, the others of the family would also float in and out to add their personal opinion, creating an interesting flavor to the process.

*Sam, Ben, and Dad all suggested the idea of adding Bill Gaither, but… πŸ™‚
Ben also suggested we nominate Gloria Gaither for Favorite Recitator, but we gently reminded him there was no such category.
Whew, that’s over! After listening to an exuberant 11-year old, nine-year old, and seven-year old excitedly and loudly share their nomination ideas, I think I’ll rest my ears for a while. πŸ™‚

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. This is cute! So the names in italics and bold got the most shout-outs?

    • That’s how I’m interpreting it.

    • No, actually, the bold and italics were my mistake, but I’ve learned now. Still have to get used to this WordPress thing! πŸ™‚

But, if the formatting was supposed to signify the loudest shout-outs, then most of the artists would be bold. πŸ˜‰

      -Taylor

      • “Most” – love it! πŸ™‚

  2. sweet. ahhhh just makes my heart pitter-patter he he darling!

    • Was anyone wondering whether sourceofpower was a guy or a gal? πŸ˜›

      • I wasn’t, but if anyone else was, there’s no doubt now. πŸ˜€

      • yankeegospelgirl you are so smart, you never wonder about anything! πŸ™‚ That’s reason enough to believe, I’ve been 2 for 2 on here lately. Daniel recently called me a “real person” and now there are doubts to whether I’m a guy or a gall! I’m flattered! πŸ™‚ Smiles all around! he he he he πŸ˜‰

      • Well to be fair, I did used to think you were a guy, but later I got suspicious. πŸ˜›

    • “Sourceofpower,
Oh thank you, I did not know we were so funny! We hope your heart is OK!” πŸ˜€

      -Jayme

      • Matthew 6:21 πŸ™‚ My heart is doing well thank you. Keep up the good work kids! Keep singing to the Lord our God! I also think they need a new category, “Soul Winning Award” the group who has one the most souls in the last year? Wouldn’t that be a beautiful category?

  3. Neat idea from the next generation of Southern Gospel!

    • “Oh, thank you!” (The LA’s in unision.)

“Thanks for the comment! It’s encouraging!” -Caleb πŸ˜€

  4. I think my favorite part of this whole thing was how Jayme thought the Cathedrals should be up for the Traditional Quartet category.

    • “Oh, well, thank you! My pleasure! I didn’t think it’d be such a great idea.” -Jayme, in the midst of giggles. πŸ˜€

      • Jayme – well, we liked it! πŸ™‚

      • Well, I’d vote for them.

  5. I liked the part about trying to fit Michael Booth into the female singer category. πŸ˜†

  6. The thing that amazes me is the likelihood and precision of many of the picks on this list! Someone has done their homework. πŸ™‚

  7. TGF, I’m thinking of throwing a monkey wrench in the whole project. πŸ™‚

I’m thinking of posting my own guesses! But I’ll do it here in the comments, so as to not attract undue attention.

As I see it, you have nothing to lose: If my guesses are more accurate (and since they’re so similar, it’ll be slightly at best!), everyone will shrug their shoulders and say “well, but of course.” If on the other hand, yours are more accurate, that’s a Story with a capital S!

Just for fun, I’ll throw in one extra category:

    Horizon Individual
    Riley Clark (Tribute Quartet)
    Joel Wood (Mark Trammell Quartet)
    Bryan Walker (Perrys)
    Craig West (Gold City)
    Sheryl Farris (McKameys)
    Trey Ivey (Legacy Five)
    Jon Epley (Statement of Faith)
Ian Owens (Ernie Haase & Signature Sound)
    Courtney Collingsworth (Collingsworth Family)
    Chris Allman (Greater Vision)

    • I’ll be honest, it’s real weird/funny to see Chris Allman as the Horizon Individual. That’s usually reserved for the under 40 crowd!

      • I was going to say that myself.

      • Pat Barker’s 40 or over, and he’s been nominated, right?

Also Frank Seamans, Gus Gaches, and David HEster, I think? And while it’s considered impolite to guess a lady’s exact age, I think it’s fair to say that Sheryl Farris (also on this year’s list) is probably also 40 or above?

      • But really, if anyone deserves it this year, he’s the one!

      • Actually, it wasn’t so much the age consideration with me as the concept of somebody new on the scene making a splash. Chris isn’t exactly new on the scene!

      • The same could be said of recent winners Frank Seamans, Eric Phillips, and Jeremy Lile.

Oh, and some guy named Ernie Haase, too, who won it in 1991.

      • But Ernie was new on the scene in 1991.

        πŸ™‚

      • No, he wasn’t. He’d already toured, relatively briefly, with Ed O’Neal – and less briefly with Squire Parsons, recording two projects with Squire.

I think it’s fair to say that Squire Parsons was on a similar tier in the mid-80s (having left one of the biggest groups of the previous decade) that Greater Vision was in the early 90s.

      • But think about it: When Chris Allman returned to Greater Vision, there was great oohing and aaahing, “Wow, veteran tenor Chris Allman returns, etc., etc.”

When Ernie joined the Cathedrals, it was like, “Hey, that new kid is really good.”

      • So Frank Seamans was the better comparison all along, and I don’t deny that Frank is a better comparison than Ernie.

    • Daniel,

Monkey wrench! You did a perfect “politically correct” version. (No offense, Boss!) We do agree with your picks, by the way, but we’re still holding out for the Cathedrals, Michael as female vocalist, and Bill Gaither as bass, and of course Jim Booth!

      -TGF

      • If this was Facebook, I would “like” this!

      • I think I would, too! πŸ™‚

      • I took no offense – no worries there! πŸ™‚

Since conservatives tend to avoid “politically correct” like the plague, though, maybe the term I would use to describe it myself would be “overly safe.” πŸ™‚ I am not sure if I went out on a single limb!

      • Good, no ruffled feathers! Yes, your “overly safe” description fits, maybe because of your maturity. Remember, the first list of predictions were (three out of four) age 11 and under…they don’t have too much to lose. They love climbing trees and hanging off limbs! πŸ™‚
        – Mom for TGF

      • Mom for TGF,

For some reason, I love having friends with that sort of personality, even though nothing could be further from my own! I think it’s not maturity, but just something about my personality, that leads me to be quite cautious – here and elsewhere. My family could tell all sorts of funny stories if they were so inclined, but as just one example that comes to mind (mundane though it surely is) I’ve been known to drive for miles behind a slow-moving vehicle on a two-lane road rather than risk passing it. (I’ve even done that sort of thing on four-lane highways, sometimes, though I’ll sometimes pass there!)

      • Actually, I’m with Daniel on this one. I could tell some hair-raising stories about my first experience on the highway with an instructor, prompting. One time I passed a truck, and then slowed down because I realized I was speeding. Another time I tried to go in front of him when it wasn’t the right moment, and he had to reach over and push the wheel back: “You are making me nervous, young woman!”

        😯

      • “Dare to be a Daniel”, is a song that comes to my mind; a song from my VBS childhood days. You know what they say about opposites attracting…Dave and I can vouch for that!! The driving story is funny. Quite a chuckler! I can relate because my husband, Dave, has similar driving traits! (FYI: He approved of that last statement.) πŸ™‚ Thanks for your transparency!
        – Mom for TGF

  8. Statement of Faith in Favorite Trio already?

    • Sure, that was probably the most daring prediction, yet they’re certainly good enough to deserve it.

    • Yes, it was one of the most daring predictions we put on the list (besides not predicting Ivan Parker to win Favorite Artist or Lead Singer πŸ˜‰ ), but as Daniel said, they stand a chance of being nominated…don’t they? πŸ™‚

      -Taylor for TGF

    • I’m just going to give you my honest opinionated answer here, and that answer is, no. Though I would love to see the group win it in the future, that’s not going to happen right now. As for being nominated… I don’t see how we’re deserving at the moment. I’m definitely proud of this group and the sound. However, we’ve not even been on the road a year yet and have gone through a member change to boot.

I’m confident we’ll be a competitor soon, but not at the moment.

      • I appreciate your humility! But whether or not you make it this year, you deserve to be top 10 some time soon.

(I’m enough of a realist to not say #1, knowing that most groups are a decade or longer on the road before they get there!)

      • Nicely said, David and Daniel. But still, we like going out on a limb for a newer group. πŸ™‚

        -TGF

  9. I can’t believe I didn’t think of this earlier…

It’s in response to TGIF (hehe) hoping for The Cathedrals nominated for Traditional Quartet and Den Meister hoping for Chris Allman nominated for Horizon Individual. You could make a case for another Horizon Individual nomination for George Younce since “he” recently recorded a new project. πŸ˜€

    • Oh, dear! But I think the project came out in this year’s eligibility period . . . so next year?

This is a tempting thought – he would be my favorite soloist, after all! πŸ™‚
