Guess the Baby Picture Contest (Part 3)

Do you know your favorite Southern Gospel personalities well enough that you would recognize them anywhereβ€”even in pictures from when they were children?

Let’s find out.

We’ve had great fun with episode 1 and episode 2. Here’s another installment: Can you name these three individuals?

UPDATE, 12:01 P.M: We have a winner! “brent” correctly guessed that #1 was Scoot Shelnut, #2 was yours truly, and #3 was Randy Shelnut. We have extended the deadline on #4 to midnight tonight, to keep the fun going. Hint: #4 is a non-performing member of the Southern Gospel industry.

Individual 1 (Correctly guessed as Scoot Shelnut):

Individual 2 (Correctly guessed as Daniel J. Mount):

Individual 3 (Correctly guessed as Randy Shelnut Sr.):

The first commenter to guess all three correctly will win a copy of Stories by the Bishops.

Oh, and this episode even has a bonus question! If you’re the first to guess this individual correctly, and you reply before midnight (EST) tonight, you get There is Love…then there is His Love for getting just this one right!

Update, 5/17/11: Regrettably, nobody got this one right before the (third) deadline! I actually stumped everyone, for once!

Bonus Individual (Clarke Beasley):

  1. 1: Scott Fowler
    2: Daniel J. Mount
    3: Roger Fortner
    Bonus: Arthur Rice

    Maybe?

  2. And we’re off again! πŸ˜‰

    Ehm… well, here goes…

    1. Jim Brady
    2. Daniel J. Mount
    3. Stan Whitmire

    Bonus… no clue.

    • We sure are! Sorry, not all of the above are correct.

  3. Am probably way off, but well…

    Bonus: Devin McGlamery

    • Devin was a towhead even when he was little.

      • Hihi, good to know for the next Baby Picture Contests.

      • Yep. πŸ™‚ Though I will say that I don’t have any from him on hand presently.

      • … which of course doesn’t mean you won’t have one from him in the future. πŸ˜‰

      • True, but even still, probably not within the next 2-3 weeks.

      • Whats a towhead?

      • Hair that is so light blond as to give an appearance of being white, typically used only of children.

      • I was always called that when I was a kid and really had no idea what they were talking about. I thought it had something to do with my head being shaped like a big toe. At least I know how it’s actually spelled now.

      • Levi – Oh, dear! Glad I could clear that up for you! πŸ™‚

      • a very blonde baby. I was a towhead when I was young.

  4. Update: Too many of my CST readers aren’t up / online yet, so I will extend the deadline on the bonus question to 11 AM EST.

  5. 1. Don’t know
    2. DJM
    3. Don’t know

    Bonus: Don’t know

    • Not all of your answers are correct . . . but I suppose that was a given! πŸ™‚

  6. 1. Anthony Davis
    2. Daniel Mount
    3. Ian Owens

    Bonus… Scott Howard

    • Sorry – not all of the above are correct.

    • Sorry, not Scott Howard.

  7. Hmm, trying again…

    1. Ronnie Booth
    2. Daniel J. Mount
    3. Stan Whitmire

    • Sorry…not all of the above are correct!

  8. I’m stumped with the first one so I’ll guess that new tenor for tribute, I can’t remember his name… then DJM, then mr bean, rueben, that is…bonus, I’ll say Gerald crabb

    • The tenor is Riley Clark, and I thought about typing his name too.

    • Hogfan – sorry, not all of the above are correct.

  9. I’m laughing to hard to guess! These are so cute! πŸ™‚

    • I think that’s the first time I’ve heard that excuse in this contest! πŸ™‚

  10. Now that there’s 45 minutes left on the clock for the bonus individual, #4, I’ll give a hint: He is an inside-the-industry person, not a current performer.

  11. Bonus: Wayne Haun?

    • No, not Wayne. (Wayne is an active performer right now, playing piano for virtually all EHSS concerts.)

      • How does one play virtual piano? πŸ˜‰

      • Read said phrase again. πŸ™‚

      • I knew what you meant, but I suppose “for” ruins the joke (unless you added it in an edit :p)

      • I did not edit said phrase, or any other word in said comment. πŸ™‚ πŸ˜€

  12. I recognized you right away. I see many others have as well. I have no ideas on the others. I am either not good at this, or don’t know many of the performers enough to recognize them. There are some I could get, and many others I know appearance-wise today, musically etc. but I guess I don’t recognize them as kids.

    • Well, there are a few here that I think I would have gotten right off (like Debra Talley) and others I might never have gotten (like Pat Barker). That’s part of what makes this series so fun!

  13. Mike hopper, DJM, Ruben bean

    • Not all of the above are correct; sorry!

  14. 1: Scott Fowler
    2: Daniel J. Mount
    3. Rodney Griffin

    Bonus:
    4. Danny Jones

    • Not all of the above are correct; sorry! (And #4 is incorrect.)

  15. Ok, am probably way off here (again ;))…
    Bonus: Michael Sykes

    • Good guess – I could actually see that one. But it’s not him.

Five minutes to go on the bonus question!

      • Thanks. I’m afraid my mind’s drawing a blank on ‘inside-the-industry/not a current performer’ at the moment… and there’s 11AM.
        So, who is it? πŸ™‚

      • Since people are actively guessing, I’m inclined to postpone the deadline for a while. If someone guesses him within the next hour or two, at any rate, I’ll be inclined to send them the prize.

  16. Fowler, mount, bean? …that first picture is killing me, bonus, I still think Gerald crabb lol

    • Not Gerald Crabb.

As to the first three: Not all of the above are correct.

  17. Dang it! Ok…I’m sticking with you and bean, this time I’ll try Scoot shelnut….and bonus, chris white

    • No, it’s not Chris.

As to the first three – sorry, not all of the above are correct.

  18. Eric Bennett, DJM, bean…bonus, Jeremy medkiff

    • Sorry, not Jeremy!

And as to the other three . . . sorry, you didn’t get them all correct!

  19. Johnny Parrack on the bonus?

  20. Random guessing:

    1. Randy “Scoot” Shelnut, Jr.
    2. Daniel J. Mount
    3. Roger Fortner (?)

I’m still thinking of the bonus person..

    • Sorry, not all of the above are correct!

  21. Ricky carden, DJM , bean….Mickey gamble haha

    • Sorry, not Mickey Gamble!

As to the other three – sorry, not all of the above are correct.

  22. This is too much fun! I don’t know about #1 and #3 … #2 is easy because the only difference is that you’ve just gotten taller! lol. Just pickin’ atcha πŸ˜‰

Did anyone guess Scooter Shelnut for the bonus?

    • πŸ™‚

Sorry, not all of the above are correct.

Scooter Shelnut? I think his name is Randy Shelnut Jr., unless you’re talking about someone else, and Scoot is just a nickname.

At any rate – Scoot Shelnut is not our bonus individual.

      • Yeah, I was talking about Scoot. For some reason “ScootER” got stuck in my head. πŸ™‚

      • Scooter Simmons maybe?

  23. 1. Scoot Shelnut 2. Daniel Mount 3. Randy Shelnut

    • WOW!

      That was sudden and unexpected!

We have a winner! It is indeed Scoot, me, and Randy.

I didn’t want to put my picture in, since I figured you knew me too well. And it turns out you did, since every single one of you guessed me correctly, I think. But a certain individual who has helped behind-the-scenes in lining up artist pictures – though he has not sent his own in – has been helping on the condition that I put my own picture up. So there you have “the rest of the story.” πŸ™‚

brent, please send me your mailing address through our contact form, and I’ll get that Bishops CD out to you.

#4 is still unguessed, and at this point, I’ll drop the deadline.

      • I am happy your put yours in. It was fun and even though we all (or it looks like right after your posted) nearly all guessed it correctly, it was nice to have one like that so that we can at least guess part of it. I do have a question, was that picture of you taken after church or something, or did you wear a tie everyday? πŸ™‚

      • πŸ™‚

I did not wear a tie every day. I loved dressing up until I took a job, about three years ago, where I was required to wear a tie every single day. Since I left that job and started with Crossroads, I’ve put on ties very rarely since.

(Yeah, I need to get a new profile picture. I’m waiting till I have a good one with the Pisgah National Forest / Blue Ridge Parkway scenery in the background. I’m hoping for that, to better capture the unbelievable natural beauty with which I am surrounded!)

      • I have worked jobs where I had to wear a time from nearly the beginning. So, since I have to wear them, I choose cool and colorful ones instead of drab ones. On my days off, I wear T-shirts and non-dress pants.

to better capture the unbelievable natural beauty with which I am surrounded!

I’m glad you didn’t say “to better capture the unbelievable natural beauty with which I am blessed to possess”. πŸ˜€

      • Eeeeeeuuuuuuwwww… πŸ™‚

After all, if appearance was the issue, *I* would be the one with the paper bag over my head trademark! πŸ™‚

Yes, I compensated at that job by wearing the brightest clothes they’d ever seen a man wear. I wore a brightly colored shirt covered with macaws, a walking fish tank shirt, et cetera, et cetera. And then, once I found out that the guidelines didn’t prohibit bow ties, I started wearing bow ties with brightly colored sequins – and the more they clashed with my shirt of the day, the better! πŸ™‚

      • LOl you are bad, not just in your comment on yourself, but the ties. I never picked anything for that reason, and they go with my outfit, they are just colorful and cool. In fact, my predecessor often complimented my choice of ties (when I wore them to church), my doctor always checks out my ties (in fact at my checkup he said “you know what is wrong, don’t you”. I was wondering if insurance was an issue or something minor with my blood work or something. Instead, he said “you don’t have a tie on today. I have never seen you without one.” Now, this was still a workday, in fact this was for insurance wellness purposes. However, we had been snowed out and the pastor closed the office (first time I saw that happen). I did that and worked on vocal arrangements from home.

Also, last night the manager at McDonald’s complimented me on my tie (musical notes in gray on a black background) which I wore on a purple shirt with black slacks. πŸ™‚

      • That sounds like a cool color combination last night!

I’ve done far less with clashing colors since. But that was a high-stress job at just pennies over minimum wage, and there was zero interaction with the public (it was a call center). So requiring ties and dress shirts bordered on absurdity. My clothing choice said that quite clearly, without saying a word!

  24. last guess and I’m out, Reggie Sadler, Dino kartsinokis (sp?), Shane Tecza…bonus Roger Neal

    • Sorry, hogfan – right before you posted, we had a winning post – for #1-#3.

Nobody’s guessed #4 yet, and no, it’s not Roger Neal.

  25. 1. Ernie Haarse 2. Tim Duncan 3. Ronnie Booth
    bonus Marshal Hall

  26. LOL Tanner.

    #4 Lari Goss

    • Nope, not Lari. He’s old enough that pictures of him that young would be in black and white!

      • My dad’s in his 60s, and I think his childhood pictures were in color. Do you have a date you’re counting from? (Of course, my memory maybe off too.)

      • Hmm. Well, there was some color back to the ’40s, so I guess that’s theoretically possible. But that color palette above screams ’70s quality color – accurately, I may add. πŸ™‚

Lari Goss was already recording and touring with the Goss Brothers by the 60s – maybe even late 50s.

  27. Bonus: It wouldn’t be Jeff Collins would it?

    • No, but I think you’re now a lot closer to the right age range than some of these other guesses!

  28. Wow, I’d give anything to have that much hair now!! At least nobody confused me for a girl like some did for my ol’ buddy Pat Barker. Haha!

    • πŸ™‚

      Yes, nobody made that mistake!

  29. Bonus: Bill Bailey?

    • That would have been great, but no!

      • How about another Bill… Bill Traylor

      • No, not him, either!

  30. Oh bother! Both of the latest contests were done and over with before we even warmed up the computer. πŸ™ Well, wait…actually we still have a chance with the bonus picture! Okay everyone, get thinking! Leesha proposes it’s himself…whoever ‘himself’ is. πŸ™‚

Hmm, now Jayme can’t say you’re so old anymore now that she saw you were a kid at one time! πŸ˜€

    -TGF

    • Leesha – great effort, but not great enough to earn a prize! πŸ™‚

Jayme – every old person was your age once. (Ponder that one for a minute! πŸ™‚ )

By the way, TGF – I’ve made a habit of posting these first thing (7 EST/6 CST) Monday morning. So if you turn the computer on first thing Monday morning, at least as long as the series runs, you’ll catch them.

  31. Bonus: Jason Webb

  32. This baby picture contest is great. But more than anything, because I have a competitive nature, is mostly frustrating. But Wayne Haun?

    • Or since he plays occasionally with EHSS, would he be omitted?

      • I think it’s more than occasionally – I think it’s virtually every concert. At any rate, it’s not him.

  33. Say, that bonus guy isn’t Danny Riley, is it?

    • No, I’d said non-performing above. πŸ™‚

  34. is it troy peach formerly of the perrys

  35. Is it Dan Pitchers of the Lesters?

  36. 99.9% positive its wrong, but Brian Alvey?

  37. Well, the (third) deadline has come and gone, and I guess I’ll have to admit that I have, for once, stumped you.

It is Clarke Beasley, son of the Florida Boys’ Les Beasley, and the person in charge of (and the public face of) the National Quartet Convention!

    • Ok, I never would have guessed him. (Not in the least because I just don’t know him. I have never been to the USA, let alone the NQC, so I wouldn’t have recognized him from there either. ;))

Thanks Daniel, that was a lot of fun again! πŸ™‚

    • I almost guessed that, but I get confused about which one’s which and didn’t want to look stupid.

      • Next time, post your almost-guesses. πŸ™‚

I mean, even if you type Les instead of Clarke Beasley, that’s still far less silly than guessing me as Tim Duncan! πŸ™‚

  38. Interesting because Les had come to my mind, but I guess both Oldhams are gone now, correct? So I couldn’t guess them.

    • Well, it’s not impossible that I could have gotten some old photos from family members, but for this post, everyone is still living last time I checked my email.
