Guess the Baby Picture Contest (Part 8)

Do you know your favorite Southern Gospel singers well enough that you would recognize them anywhereβ€”even in pictures from when they were children?

Let’s find out. We’ve had great fun with episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This round might be a little harder; all of these singers are old enough that the pictures are in their original black and white. However, all three remain at the forefront of nationally known groups today. Can you name these three singers?

Update, 11:10 PM 6/21/2011: We have a winner! Congratulations, Ross!

Singer 1 (Phil Collingsworth)

Singer 2 (Chris Allman)

Singer 3 (Gerald Williams)

The first person to guess all three correctly will receive a copy of the Kingdom Heirs’ Forever Changed, featuring the original rendition of “I Know I’m Going There.”

  1. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Mike Holcomb
    3. Tim Riley

    • Frank – sorry, not all of the above are correct!

  2. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Ronnie Booth
    3. Archie Watkins

    • Sorry – not all of the above are correct!

      • Archie was my guess as well for number 3

  3. Love that CD!!! Jodi was great on that CD! I am going to have to formulate my guess though before I comment on the pictures. LOL!

    • Oh, come on . . . start guessing! Nobody gets it in the first ten, but as you start tossing ideas out there, you’re more likely to get on a roll! πŸ˜€

  4. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Ronnie Booth
    3. Tim Riley

    • Sorry, not all of the above are correct!

By the way: Unless any others trickle in, this is the final black & white installment. I’ve had enough trickle in that I have two color installments left.

      • I guessed Tim for #3 because it looks like he is even hitting one of his low Ab’s in this picture. LOL! He is THE MAN!

      • That is funny! Do you really think he was singing this low when he was a baby? πŸ™‚

      • I personally do not know if he was ever NOT singing those low Ab’s! LOL! You got to admit…he does look like he is bearing down on “Rainbow of Love” in this picture! LOL!

      • πŸ™‚

    • Oh wait… #3 looks more like Tim Riley. Good pick!

      • Mamma, where’s my pacifier?

      • Samuel – I can assure you that #3 is not Tim Duncan. I believe Tim Duncan was born in the era of color photography. πŸ™‚

  5. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Ronnie Booth
    3. Archie Watkins

  6. Sorry, Frank – not all of the above are correct!

  7. Phil Collingsworth
    Mark Trammell
    Glenn Dustin

    • Sorry, Josh – not all of the above are correct!

  8. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Michael Booth
    3. Archie Watkins

    • Sorry, Frank, not all of the above are correct!

  9. 1) Steve French
    2) Dean Hopper
    3) Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Chris, not all of the above are correct!

  10. Here’s our guesses!

    1.) Phil Collingsworth
    2.) Ronnie Booth (Caleb suggests!)
    3.) Tim Riley

    • Hi, Caleb! πŸ™‚

Sorry, not all of the above are correct!

      • Hi Daniel,

We gave it a try! πŸ™‚

Maybe we replace Ronnie with Michael! πŸ˜€ Would that work?

        With love,
        Caleb πŸ˜†

      • Replace Ronnie with Michael? What on earth would the world do with two Michael Booths loose in it?

Say, if they took up residence in separate states, they could always run for President and Vice President!

Sorry, Caleb, you still don’t have all of the above correct! πŸ™‚

  11. My guesses are
    Phil Cross
    Michael Booth
    Tim Riley

    • Sorry – not all of the above are correct! πŸ™‚

  12. How about
    Bill Shivers
    Jeff Easter
    Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Jason – not all of the above are correct.

  13. I would like to change that first pic from bill shivers to doug anderson. If you want to give me that kingdom heirs cd for a good effort I’ll take it πŸ™‚

    • Sorry, that still doesn’t make it an all-three-correct guess!

Everyone here is putting in a good effort, and I have every confidence that – as in the seven times before – we will have a winner this time, too. πŸ™‚

By the way: Once we reach the 50-comment threshold, I’ll post two or three hints.

  14. I gotta hand it to you, you don’t compromise. You must be independant baptist. One last guess for me…. I’m gonna guess that first one is Lorne Matthews

    • No, I’m not IFB. πŸ™‚

In previous installments, I’ve had people file upwards of 25 legitimate, good guesses. So it would take more than that to tempt me to compromise (and then, only if it appeared that a winner was impossible, and I think it’s very possible here!)

    • And no, not Lorne.

  15. I agree with Samuel…that #3 little guy’s pic just begs for a caption. I’m thinking, “just go ahead and TRY to start something with me…I double-dog dare ya!”. What a cutie!!

    • I vote for that caption! πŸ™‚

  16. Eric Bennett
    Ronnie Booth
    Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Ross, not this combination!

  17. Ok Daniel I’ve got it
    Jay Parrack
    Jeff easter
    Tim riley

I’ll take that cd now πŸ™‚

    • Sorry, it’s a correct trio of guesses that win CDs, and that comment doesn’t quite cut it! πŸ™‚

  18. Can’t blame for trying, right?

    • To a point – as long as I’m confident that you’re joking!

  19. I am only joking. I am a joke kinda of guy. Unless I lose!!!! Just joking again. Daniel can you tell me where paul david kennamer is now. Is he still singing??

    • OK, great! πŸ™‚

I have not heard anything from him or of his whereabouts since he left Valor.

  20. That is a shame. He inspired me to sing bass and now I can sing three octaves below the lowest note on a piano

  21. Well we record it on a computer and we can count the cycles per second. Its a fact. Don’t be a doubter thomas

  22. I’m not sure what the lowest note is but everyone says I’ve got it beat.

  23. I’m not sure what the lowest note is but everyone says I’ve got it beat. And I’m probably the best bass singer you’ve ever heard

  24. Hints:

    (1) At least one of the individuals have not been named yet

    (2) These individuals can, between them, cover pretty much the entire vocal spectrum available to the male voice.

    (3) #3 can, indeed, hit the notes he has been accused of hitting

  25. Sounds like you doubt me there Daniel. I’m sorry u feel that way. One more guess for me. Jay Parrack Jonathan Wilburn Tim riley

    • Sorry – not all of the above are correct!

It’s not that I doubt you can vocalize at that frequency. I’m just more impressed by the notes that you can hear! πŸ™‚

  26. I understand. I hope there are no limit to the number of guesses. I need one more hint and I’ve got it

    • OK. Hint: All three have at least some hair left.

  27. 1. Clayton Inman
    2.McCray Dove
    3. Tim riley

    • Sorry, Frank: Not all of the above are correct!

  28. Daniel. Most southern gospel basses have abnormally low range. What is the average range for a bass to sing in a quartet without the extra deep notes

    • The b-flat below a baritone’s bottom end is all that’s necessary. Beyond that point, resonance, tone, and on-stage charisma are far more crucial than the actual notes.

By the way, please take further off-topic discussion to an open thread.

  29. I know I got it this time !!!

    1. Jessy Dixon
    2.Mccray Dove
    3. Tim Riley

    Do I have 2 0ut of 3 correct?

  30. Another hint time
    How about clayton inman
    Mcrays brother and tim riley

    • Sorry, not all of the above are correct!

  31. I’ve got it. Clayton Inman
    Jerr Martin
    Tim Riley

  32. Instead of clayton inman how about david hester

    • Sorry – it’s not that combination!

  33. I think we both know that I have the right answer Daniel

    • You might think, but you probably have read here long enough to know that I am being honest and truthful when I say that the answer isn’t correct.

  34. Well I am going to get my seventh day adventist pastor friend to comment on here and it is against his religion to lie and he will prove to u that I am the lowest and best bass singer in recorded history. Ps. This is a wonderful blog

    • a youtube video would make a more convincing case. πŸ™‚

      • Agreed. Opinions about “best” are subjective.

Statements about “lowest” are best believed once certified by the Guiness Book of World Records.

(Besides, most or all of us are Christians here, and it’s against our religion to lie, too – what more authority would someone of another religion bring?)

      • Here’s the deal: When it comes down to it, none of us have heard every bass in the world. So, even if you are the best and lowest your friend has heard is no evidence no one is better or lower. Now let’s see that video and maybe we’ll tell you what we think.

      • Thanks, q-m and spider for saying what I was thinking but hadn’t had the time to type out and explain. Show me a convincing YouTube live performance, so that I know there’s less chance it was doctored in the studio, and I’ll consider whether you were the best to ever step on stage.

And show me the Guinness Book of World Records certificate, and I’ll believe that you’re the lowest. πŸ™‚

(And, to everyone, let’s please move further discussion of these claims to an open thread, if there is any further!)

  35. Phil Collingsworth
    Mark Trammell
    Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Josh, not all of the above are correct!

  36. Ooooook!! Here ya Daniel!!

    Arthur Rice
    Eric Dove
    Tim Riley

    • Here ya go Daniel*

    • Sorry, Ross, not all of the above are correct!

  39. Phil Cross
    Mark Trammell
    JD Sumner

    • Sorry, Josh – not these three!

  40. Phil Collingsworth
    Gus Gaches
    Tim Riley

    • Sorry – not this particular combination!

  41. Phil Collingsworth
    Gus Gaches
    JD Sumner

    • Sorry, not these three! (I thought this combo was guessed earlier.)

      • Nope.

        I give up!

      • Sorry!

Time for another hint. One of these three has appeared previously in this series!

  42. Eric Bennett
    Bill Bailey
    Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Ross, #2 is not Bill Bailey. All three are currently performing singers ranging from middle-aged to past retirement age.

  48. We’re back! We don’t give up too easily! (Not yet anyway…)

    1.) Phil Collingsworth
    2.) Gary Casto
    3.) Tim Riley

    -BLT

    • BLT, glad to hear that you don’t give up too easily! Sorry, not these three! πŸ™‚

  49. 1- Jeff Whisnant
    2- Eric Ollis
    3- Ray Dean Reese

    • Sorry, SanGram, not these three!

  50. Typically, by the time we have reached 100 comments, consensus has developed about at least one of the three, and I am in a position to verify it. Here, though, no consensus has developed – at least about the right individual!

So, instead of verifying a consensus to be correct, as I typically do at this point, let me offer two big hints:

    (1) Two of the three individuals have been correctly guessed, though not together.

    (2) #3 is not Tim Riley.

Couple these with earlier hints, and the field starts to narrow quickly!

  51. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Gary Casto
    3. Ray Dean Reese

    • Sorry, Frank (8:11) – not these three!

  52. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Jerry Martin
    3. Gerald Williams

    • Sorry – not all of the above are corrrect.

  53. OK, I’ll try again.
    1- Ernie Haase
    2- Mike Holcomb
    3- Ed O’Neal

    • Sorry, SanGram, these three aren’t the right ones and/or right combination of ones!

  54. 1. Steve French
    2. Chris Allman
    3. Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, Hostofheaven – not this combination!

  55. 1. Steve French
    2. Scoot Shelnut
    3. Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, but not this combination! Scoot isn’t THAT old! πŸ™‚

  56. 1. Josh Singletary
    2. Ronnie Booth
    3. J.D. Sumner

    • Sorry, Mr. Big, not all of the above are correct!

      • How about:

        1. Clayton Inman
        2. Jerry Martin

      • Sorry; no!

  57. 1. Clayton Inman

  59. My last gasp,

    1. Roger Talley
    2. Michael Booth
    3. J.D. Sumner

    • Sorry, pull out the ventilator, ’cause it’s not these three!

  60. 1. Steve French
    2. Chris Allman

    • Sorry – HostofHeaven – not all of the above are correct!

  61. Clayton Inman

    2. Ronnie Booth
    3. Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Joseph – not all of the above are correct!

  63. # 1 and # 2 are the same person

    • That would be quite a twist, and quite funny! They are actually two different people.

  64. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Jerry Martin
    3. Arthur Rice

    • Sorry, Hostofheaven (1:07), this isn’t the correct pairing of three just yet.

  65. The lowest of the low is back

    Clayton inman
    Jerry martin
    Ed Oneil

    • Sorry, lowest of the low, this is not a winning guess.

  66. 1. Steve French
    2. Pat Barker
    3. Arthur Rice

    • Sorry, not all of the above are correct! (1:45 pm)

  67. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Jerry Martin
    3. Arthur Rice

    • Oops. Did not realize this was already guessed. Sorry.

    • Sorry, J.C. – not this combination! (Arthur’s not THAT old, is he? πŸ™‚ )

      • I personally do not think Arthur is human. There is no telling how old he is! LOL! The things he can do vocally are unmatched by any other lead/tenor out there. LOL!

      • I’m convinced that he is human. I’m not quite as convinced about his hair, though! πŸ™‚

  68. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Michael Booth
    3. Arthur Rice

    • Sorry, J.C. (2:02): Not all of the above are correct.

  69. We have now had 150 comments, so it’s time for another big hint – one that will trigger the race to the finish line. All have now been named. πŸ™‚

  70. Arthur Rice
    Eric Dove
    Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, Ross, this is not the winning combination!

  71. The lowest of the low is back

    Clayton inman
    Jerry martin
    Mike aLlen

    • Sorry, Mr. Low, not this combination, either!

  72. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Scott Fowler
    3. Mcray Dove

    • Sorry, Nate – not this combination!

  73. 1. Phil Collingsworth Senior
    2. Jim Brady
    3. Tim RIley

    • Sorry, FaityTaleAuthor, not all of the above are correct!

  74. 1. Glen Dustin
    2. Jerry Martin
    3. Tim Riley

    • Sorry, Joseph – I said above that it’s not Tim Riley.

      • Aah, sorry about that, it’s hard to follow the thread once it picks up steam!! πŸ™‚

      • I totally understand, especially in a thread this size!

  75. Ok
    Ed o neil
    Eric dove
    Archie watkins

    • Sorry, Jason C:, but not this combination.

  76. Daniel I must know
Where is aaron Mccune now. No ones knows why he left gold city but I heard rumors of him singing with ryan seaton so is aaron still singing or slaughtering cows

    • Aaron is still singing with Ryan’s part-time quartet.

  77. Daniel, would you or anyone else like my autograph. I’ll be happy to give u one from the worlds lowest and best singer.

    • You are funny – but this is off-topic; please take further discussion about your range and singing to our open threads.

  78. Just this morning I hit the second E below middle C

  79. How about
    Clayton inman
    Eric bennett
    Archie watkins

    • Sorry; not this combination, J-Ch.

  80. I just would like to say aaron is probably the best out there and I hope he never stops. Thanks daniel

  81. Eric Bennett
    Chris Allman
    Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, Ross – not all of the above are correct!

  82. My weekly bad guess:

    1. Clayton Inman
    2. Ronnie Booth
    3. Pat Barker

    • It’s really not a terrible guess, but sorry – not all of the above are correct!

  83. 1. Archie Watkins
    2. Eric Dove
    3. Ed O’Neal

    • Sorry, Megan, not this combination!

      • 1. Eric Dove

        3. Ed O’Neal

      • Sorry, Megan, not these three!

      • 1. Archie Watkins
        2. McCray Dove
        3. Ed O’Neal

      • Sorry, not this combination!

Would you mind posting guesses as separate comments instead of replies? It would be easier for me to keep track. πŸ™‚

  84. David Hester
    Chris Allman
    Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, Ross, not these three!

      • I’ll wait on another hint.

  85. Another hint time πŸ™‚ !!!

    • You seriously don’t need any more hints! πŸ™‚ Based on the hints I have already given, you could guess it now by the brute force method – trying every possible combination given the hints, and you’d be certain to stumble across the correct one sooner or later.

  86. Where’s the fun in the brute force method?? lol Ok. Here is what Ive got so far….#3 is a bass singer but isn’t Tim Riley. One of the three have been featured in this series before, so I think that #2 is Chris Allman. I still think that #3 is Gerald Williams. That is clearly the oldest photo. #1 is the toughest one for me. I have went back and forth with that one. Here is my guess….
    1. Arthur Rice
    2. Chris Allman
    3. Gerald Williams

    • Your thinking is cogent, but you haven’t exactly landed on quite the right combination yet. Sorry! πŸ™‚

  87. I don’t think this is it but…..

    Steve French
    Chris Allman
    Gerald Williams

  88. Obviously we need another hint

  89. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Chris Allman
    3. Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, Frank, not this combo! I think it may have been guessed above, too.

  90. 1. Phil Collingsworth
    2. Gary Casto
    3. Archie Watkins

    • Sorry, Paul – not this combination!

  91. 1. David Hester
    2. Gary Casto
    3. Archie Watkins

    • Sorry, Paul, not all of the above are correct!

  92. 1. Clayton Inman
    2. Jim Brady
    3. Gerald Williams

    • Sorry, Frank, not these three! (10:22)

  93. I don’t know if it’s legal to try twice, but this is my last try, so here goes.

    1.Phil Collingsworth Senior
    2. Chris Allman
    3. Ed O’Neal

    • You can guess as many times as you like!

      Sorry, not these three, though!

  94. David hester
    Jerry Martin
    archie watkins

    • Sorry – but the winning entry was below!

  95. Last guess of the night…..
    Phil Collingsworth Sr
    Chris Allman
    Gerald Williams

    • WE HAVE A WINNER!

Please send your address to us via Facebook (since we’re friends there) or the contact form!

      • Awesome!!! Phil Sr. almost had me!! Thanks Daniel.

      • You’re welcome!

  96. David hester
    Eric dove
    Archie watkins

    • Sorry – the correct answer is above!

  97. 1-Guy Penrod
    2-Gene McDonald
    3- Charlie Waller

    • Sorry, the above combination is not correct. πŸ˜€

      • I know that because the winners have already been chosen. πŸ˜€

      • Q-M – Correct, the winners have already been chosen. πŸ™‚

  98. That’s frustrating. I have it all figured out and someone else gets it just before I submit my Sonya Isaacs, Gloria Gaither and Sandy Patti guess! I just knew that was the winning combo.

  99. Who won

  100. Surprised but delighted to see Chris’s baby picture. Wasn’t he a handsome child and he is still handsome, What more could a mother ask for.
    Blessings.
    Janice Allman

  101. I’m not sure it was even fair for me to guess on this one, cause one of the three singers here is my uncle! Though I won’t say which one. πŸ™‚

    • Well, the winners have already been announced, but feel free to guess anyhow if you so choose. πŸ™‚

  102. The blog reads as though Jason Ch is a legend in his own mind.

    • Apt observation. πŸ™‚

We have offered to listen to proof of his claims, should he offer them, but that has yet to surface! πŸ™‚
