FreeHymnal posts 1000th Hymn

After several months of design work, I launched FreeHymnal.com in January 2010. In the announcement, here, I discussed the need for such a site; many hymn sites have lyrics or lyrics and MIDI files. For a church musician actually looking for sheet music for public domain hymns, though, the alternatives are far more limited.

I remain involved in the technical administration of the website, but Levi Johnston has stepped forward to oversee most of the day-to-day operations. He posted the site’s 1000th hymn yesterday. (The hymn was Fanny Crosby’s Gladly We Will Go, and was not specifically selected for the occasion.)

A new hymn is posted each day, so with every day, the site becomes an increasingly valuable resource for church musicians.

  1. Congrats. I forgot you were doing that, I will have to check it out.

    • Thanks, q-m! With the church/choir work you do, I hope it may end up useful in a pinch!

      • There are times I need a quick hymn that isn’t in the hymnbooks at church. Sometimes I have to arrange them myself and even with a single page hymn, I am looking at hours of work. It will be especially cool when you get the XML done. That way I can modify the harmonies, change keys, add or remove verses etc. as Finale will import XML.

      • Do you want to volunteer? 🙂

I’m not ruling out whether I’ll ever have time to get to it, but it’s been over a year and I still haven’t found the time!

      • Well, not right now, but maybe someday. 🙂

      • OK! 🙂

  2. Very cool Daniel!

  3. Thanks, Daniel:
IT really give me a great help, thank you for your works,

May God be with you and your family!!!

  4. I pray and hope that more churchmen and women will sing more of these beautiful hymns. Thanks for the availability of these hymns to us. They are certainly enriching and inspiring.
