Howard Hayes passes away

Multiple sources have confirmed that Howard Hayes passed away today. He was fighting cancer and had recently been placed in hospice.

Howard was the patriarch and bass singer of the Hayes Family, anchoring their traditional, convention-style blends for about forty years.

Here is a video of the Hayes Family singing the old convention classics “Wonderful” and “My Heavy Burdens Have Rolled Away,” both featuring step-out bass lines from Howard.

10 Letters to the Editor

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. Good man. And good friend to many. Great family.

  2. In an industry where the term can be overused, he was genuinely a gracious, Christian gentleman.

  3. One of the finest families in Gospel Music. I always thought they were the perfect family. May God Bless them during this time of loss. Richard Nash Ministries

  4. A great family man with a passion for ministry. Thank you Mr Hayes for your help in keeping good old-time convention singing alive. He will be greatly missed.

  5. An example of Christian Fatherhood because he knew who his true FATHER was.

  6. I first heard them on a Gaither Video, and I was hooked! Especially when Janet and Sharon played a piano duet! I was so impressed with them when I heard them for the first time. It was on a Saturday afternoon, and when I asked where they would be on Sunday morning, Howard not only told me, but saw to it that I got all the information I needed to get there. Lateron,I was at a concert in a church, close to where I live, when they sang “O Glorious Love”, and the Spirit came down as praises filled that sanctuary!
I have since purchased older recordings, and the quality has only improved, the message has never wavered.
We will miss this gentle man, but he has reached his lifes dream. I was unaware that he was battling cancer.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

  7. I never met Howard or knew him personally but it sure felt like I did. He IS a good man. Thank You for making this world a little bit better. You are now receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your soul. God Bless You Howard.
