Songs from Exodus

This is the second entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankindβ€”songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

Several weeks ago, we examined those claims, starting with Genesis. Let’s move on to Exodus today. For how many chapters in Genesis can we find Southern Gospel songs addressing their themes?

  1. Off the top of my head:

    Perfect Candidate, GV
    Standing on Holy Ground, Cats

I’m sure I’ll think of more.

    • Delivered from the Hands of Pharoah, old convention song recorded (at least) by the Perrys and GVB.

Don’t know if you would put it in Exodus, Numbers or Deuteronomy, but how about Canaanland is Just in Sight?

Bring Me Out of the Desert – old-school McKameys

    • Great songs all around! I’ve added “Perfect Candidate,” “Standing on Holy Ground,” and “Delivered from the Hands of Pharaoh.”

I’m not sure where to place “Canaanland is Just in Sight.” I think I’ll place it as a generic Exodus listing without giving a chapter.

I don’t have that McKameys song. What chapter should I associate it with?

      • It’s generic to the whole wilderness experience. The pillar of fire, cloud, manna, etc. Somewhere in the middle of Exodus. πŸ™‚

      • OK – I’ll just do with it what I did with the Heaven Bound song, then. πŸ™‚

  2. Exodus 14: “It’s Just Another Red Sea”

Incidentally, my best friend (Dale Chambers) was singing with the Calvary Echoes when they recorded “Moses, Take Your Shoes Off.”

  3. My favorite:

“God Delivers Again” Cathedrals. Exodus 14.

This song has encouraged me many times.

  4. Testing the boundaries of this exercise, but how about “Stand Still” by the Isaacs? It doesn’t directly mention the story of the Red Sea, but the theme of the song clearly comes from Exodus 14:13.

That reminds me that I wrote a bluegrass song called “Stand Still” a while back. It does go directly to Exodus 14. But it’s not very good. πŸ™‚ I think I sang it once.

    • Good thought. The inspiration seems to be pretty clear (I looked up the verse), so I added it.

  5. Just Stand Legacy Five
The Blood Is Still There Kevin Spencer & Friends

    • Thanks! I’m not familiar with “The Blood is Still There” – what chapter would that be from?

  6. Can’t wait to see your list when you come to Leviticus!

  7. I am trying to find the chapter now.

  8. It is Exodus chapter 12.

    • Thanks! I’m just editing that in now.

  9. Exodus 12 for The Blood is Still There. Big song in its day…

  10. “On Time God”, Lauren Talley. The great Dottie Peoples wrote some great lines into it about God’s people being trapped at the Red Sea “by that mean ole Pharoah and his army”. Love it!!

    • Thanks! And thanks to everyone else who has submitted a song. I probably won’t have the chance to update the list again till late tonight or early tomorrow, but I do plan to get these up eventually!

    • I just edited that in. Thanks again!

  11. The song that immediately came to my mind was Terah Crabb Penhollow singing “Standing at the Red Sea . . . ” Gerald Crabb’s song He’ll Make a Way performed by the Crabb Family.

Standing at the Red Sea, no place to go
Pharaoh’s army was closing in, they’d soon overthrow
But right out of nowhere came a might strong hand
He rolled back the water, he made a way out again

  12. Led By A Cloud – Crossmen (1997) written by Connie Hopper.

    • Would I be correct in guessing Exodus 13 for that song?

  13. How about the song “Exodus”, words written by Pat Boone, recorded by the Imperials in about 1968.

    • I’d be happy to add it, but since I’m not familiar with the song – under what primary chapter should I list it?

  14. I’m Going Through- McKameys (Red Sea)
I Made the Move- Hinsons (Leaving Egypt)
Fire by Night, Cloud by Day- Cumberland Quartet
The Lord Knows What to Do- Perrys (second verse)

    • Thanks! Any thoughts on appropriate chapters?

(I should be able to check myself on the Perrys one, since I have it.)

      • I’m Going Through- Exodus 14:29-30
        I Made the Move- Exodus 12:31 (?)
Fire by Night, CLoud by Day- Exodus 13:21

I thought that “The Lord Knows What to Do” had the Red Sea mentioned. My mistake. I was thinking of “Perfect Candidate” which has already been listed. Both are excellent Griffin tunes.

      • Thank you so much!

        Ah…that explains why I couldn’t find it! πŸ™‚

    • Maybe I’m totally missing it, but I’m just not getting the Exodus reference in “The Lord Knows What to Do.”

      • I explained my mistake in the above comment. πŸ™‚

      • Yes – order of comment replies can get confusing. πŸ™‚

      • Ahh, yes, they can.

  15. I just added the Isaacs’ “Don’t Let Your Light Grow Dim” to Exodus 34:29-35. πŸ™‚

  16. I just added one I should have thought of on day 1 – “He Will Hide Me” by the Perrys, Exodus 33!

  17. I just added two songs titled “Covered By the Blood,” one penned by Squire Parsons and sung by the Kingsmen, and the other penned by Jason Clark and sung (naturally) by the Nelons.

  18. Just added “The Fire Still Burns” by the Old Paths to Exodus 3.

  19. Just found something for chapter 2! Preach – Talley Trio

    • …and another! In the Basket – Poet Voices

  20. Glimpse of your Glory – Ball Brothers
    Chapter 33

    • Great one – I should have thought of that one sooner!
