Songs from Ezekiel

This is the twenty-sixth entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankind—songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

For how many chapters in Ezekiel can we find Southern Gospel songs addressing their themes?

  • Ezekiel 1 (10?): Ezekiel Saw the Wheel (Gold City, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Couriers)
  • Ezekiel 34:26: There Shall Be Showers Of Blessing (Statesmen)
  • Ezekiel 37: Dry Bones (Blue Ridge, Cathedrals, Couriers, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound)
  • Ezekiel 37: Bones (Brian Free & Assurance)
  • Ezekiel 37: Preach (Talley Trio)
  • Ezekiel 37: Dry Bones (Austins Bridge)
  • Ezekiel 37: The Boneyard (Gold City)
  • Ezekiel 38:20: The Mountains Will Be Shaken (Down East Boys)
  • Ezekiel 47:12: Tree of Life (Dixie Echoes) (allusion)

What others come to mind?

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. Dry Bones by Austins Bridge; not the same as the EHSS song.

    • Thanks, Nick!

      • No problem. Btw, if you’ve not heard it, the version on their Oaktree session is pretty awesome. Toby (that’s with Union Street/Square/location now) absolutely nails the third verse.

      • I saw them live, but I do not recall if they sang that song. Toby’s vocals were far and away the high point of the night – I was comparing him, in my concert review, to a Wes Hampton level of talent. So I’m not exactly surprised that he nails a verse! 🙂

  2. What about the song by Gold City on “Answer the Call”??

    I think it’s called “The Bone Yard”….

    • I will add it now; thanks! Gold City titles are so hard to put hands on – I have yet to acquire a copy of that album.

      • It’s an excellent album… it pales in comparison to Pillars of Faith, but still a very good album from a very good lineup.

I had a tape copy years ago, and a few years ago bought a REAL copy on eBay(used CD)… but I see now that there are a bunch of bootleg copies available now. I wish Gold City would re-release some of their older albums. I “think” it would discourage these bootlegs from floating around.

      • Agreed. It is so frustrating to order Gold City albums online, because sometimes I do that, they arrive, and it turns out that they are bootlegs!

  3. Just added Ezekiel 34:26 – There Shall Be Showers of Blessing – Statesmen
