Songs from Daniel

This is the twenty-seventh entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankindβ€”songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

For how many chapters in Daniel can we find Southern Gospel songs addressing their themes?

  1. I know there’s a lot more from Daniel 3. A couple off the top of my head are “God Will Make a Way” (Greater Vision and some others) and “Miracles Will Happen on That Day”. Gold City has an old song called “Four in the Fire”.

  2. From Daniel 6, one of the verses of Gold City’s “Gonna Take It and Leave It”.

  3. I also believe that the Kingdom Heirs recorded “God Will Make A Way” a year or so after GV. Good tune.

    • Thanks! I actually don’t have their Extraordinary album yet.

  4. The BFA song you have titled “Pray Daniel Pray” is actually entitled “Praying Man.” However, there WAS a song called “Pray Daniel Pray” that was recorded by Won By One on the Bold and Unashamed CD. It’s one of the closest things to a Southern Gospel rap that you’ll hear. Featured Bob Caldwell half singing and half speaking the story of Daniel and the lion’s den. Fun song!

    • Thanks, Wes! I added it. I guess you can tell which line from that BF&A song is stuck in my mind. πŸ™‚

  5. I’m surprised you didnt’ mention “He’s Still In The Fire” by the Speers….

    • Well, I pretty much mention whatever comes to mind, and though I know and love that song, it just didn’t come to mind the day I was working on this post. Thanks for mentioning it – I’ll add it now!

  6. You know, Daniel 7:14 opens up a slew of songs that could be considered…

    The Next Cloud (Kingsmen)
There’s A King On The Way (Perfect Heart)
    Clouds (Kingdom Heirs)

    and a bunch more….

    • Sure, why not? πŸ™‚

      • Except my eyes and brain aren’t fully awake yet. That should be 7:13, not 7:14… πŸ˜€

      • Thanks – will fix!

  7. Hey Daniel. “I Won’t Look at the Lions” is a great song that Crossway sang on their “No Distractions” CD.

  8. “Nothing Was Burned But Their Bands” by the Perrys… written by Dianne Wilkinson and Kyla Rowland. : )

    • Man! I should’ve gotten that one off of the top of my head. Thanks!

      • πŸ™‚

  9. Didn’t the Perry’s sing the song Power in Prayer…
Verse 1 starts Ole Daniel bowed his head and he prayed…

    • Though I haven’t heard it, they did do a song by that name. Thanks!

  10. I see several variations of four men walking but not “Four Men Walking Around”–one of my favorites on The Isaac’s Why Can’t We CD

    • I don’t know if that’s a new song or an alternate title for an older one.

  11. I just checked my iTunes and the composers listed for Four Men Walking Around are Sonya Isaacs and Ben Isaacs.

  12. The Paynes and Crabb Family…..I’ve Got a Right to Pray.

  13. Wow Daniel, you’ve written a lot of songs! (sarcasm/joke)

Can’t think of any right now…

    • Most people are unaware of my many interests outside of blogging. πŸ˜›

(For the record, though, I don’t actually LIKE fighting lions. It’s a necessary evil at best. πŸ˜› )

      • I meant how the post title is “Songs from Daniel”

      • I knew that was what you meant – that was what my similarly light-hearted comments were in reply to. πŸ™‚

  14. Dancing in the Fire was an excellent song by Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet.

    • Great song! I’d forgotten about it – I probably haven’t played it in several years!

  15. Jeff and Sheri Easter – We’re Not Gonna Bow (Daniel 3)

  16. “Oh Daniel” by the Perry’s on the “Absolutely Positively LIVE” album

  17. There’s also one called “Walking In The Flames” that was written by Steve Hurte. Here’s a video of Ron Martin (The Rowlands) singing the song. It starts at the 1:45 mark.

At 70 years old, Ron’s voice still amazes me… Love to hear him sing!

    • Thanks, Jessie! I’ll add it now.

  18. Didn’t the Talleys have a song that mentioned the Ancient Of Days from Daniel Chapter 7? I can’t for the life of me remember what song though I’m pretty sure it was them.

    • I don’t recall, but there could well have been. Let me know if it comes to your mind!

  19. How about “If I COuld Just Hold Out ’til Tomorrow” from the Cathedrals from the “Especially For You” album.

“Well, they put o’le Daniel in the lions den
The thing they didn’t know o’le Dan had a friend
Well, he prayed every morning every noon and night
The lion got the lock-jaw and couldn’t take a bite”

This song also has a verse about Jonah and another about Moses (Jonah and Exodus)

    πŸ™‚

  20. Daniel 3 – Take It From Me, Meshach (Triumphant)

  21. I finally found one for Daniel 5: Handwriting On The Wall (McKameys)
