Songs from I Corinthians

This is the forty-sixth entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankind—songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

For how many chapters in I Corinthians can we find Southern Gospel songs addressing their themes?

  1. 1 Corinthians is my favorite book of the Bible! So much great practical teaching. I think there are things covered in it yet that need more songs written about it. You’ve got a good list here.

Maybe not directly applicable in its lyrical context, but I always think of 1 Corinthians 6:20 when I hear “Bought by the King” (Kingdom Heirs). “For ye are bought with a price…” Same words are used in chapter 7, verse 23.

Greater Vision’s “We Have a Way of Escape,” written by Chris’s sister Robin, is from 10:13.

I love MTT’s “According to the Scriptures,” from 15:3.

Any song at all about the Rapture can be connected to the latter part of 1 Corinthians 15. For example, “In the Twinkle of an Eye” by the Inspirations. (15:52). (There are plenty of other songs that use the “twinkling” phrase).

“It’s Not in Vain,” from 15:58.

    • Wow! Thanks, and great list! I’ll start to work on adding these now.

  2. I Can Almost Hear the Trumpet – The McKameys

  3. The Resurrection Morn, Collingsworth Family, 1 Corinthians 15:52

    • Thanks, John!

    • The King is Coming- The Gaithers.

      • Are you thinking of it with I Corinthians 15:52 specifically in mind? Of course, both the verse and the song talk about the Second Coming, but was there a line that you had in mind that specifically connects it to this verse?

  4. There is the mention of the trumpet sounding, in both the bible verse and the song. The bible verse speaks of the last trumpet, which I think is referred to in the song in the words “the flurry of God’s trumpet sounds the end of sin and wrong,” in the last stanza. The chorus also mentions the “trumpet sounding.” that is the connection I made between the song and the bible verse. Isn’t it the same trumpet that Triumphant Quartet sing of in their song?

    • Ah, thanks! Yes, I see the connection now.

“…Triumphant Quartet sing of in their song” – which song? Triumphant has recorded quite a few songs over the last decade. 🙂

      • When The Trumpet Sounds, it is already on your list.

      • Ah, yes! Thanks!

      • The pleasure is mine! I personally find much pleasure in participating!

      • Great! I’m glad I’m not the only one really enjoying this series! 🙂

  5. In the Twinkling of an Eye was a #1 for the Greenes back in the day.

    • Thanks! I’ve yet to find a copy of the album with that song for my personal collection.

  6. Just added Two Coats – EHSS to 15:47.
