Songs from I John

This is the sixty-second entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankind—songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

For how many chapters in I John can we find Southern Gospel songs addressing their themes?

  • I John 1:7: Walkin’ in the Light (Collingsworth Family)
  • I John 1:7: Walkin’ in the Light (Dixie Melody Boys) (different song)
  • I John 1:7: Walking in the Light (Daybreak Quartet) (third song)
  • I John 1:7: Walking in the Light (Blackwood Brothers) (fourth song)
  • I John 1:7: The Blood of Jesus (Collingsworth Family)

20 Letters to the Editor

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. “Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world…” 1 John 4:4

“Oh how I love Jesus, because He first loved me” from 1 John 4:19

  2. I John 3:2 ‘When He Comes Down’ – The Hoppers

  3. Daniel

Jim Brady used a ton of notes I had taken from First John to writhe the song What About Now. It doesn’t quote the Bible but it’s fundamentally First John and James.

Some great songs on your list.

    • Thanks! I hadn’t been sure what passage to use when citing that song. If I can think of a relatively specific allusion, I’ll definitely add it in!

    • Reading through it this morning, I definitely thought of that song, though not a specific reference.

    • To further elaborate, I was thinking about the relative lack of gospel songs that deal with the “practical” side of salvation, and just how it is that we SHOW that we are saved, which I John deals with heavily (as well as James). “What About Now” is a great example of that kind of song.

  4. Well with the new additions I thought if one I can’t believe you left out. ‘Oh the Thought that Jesus Loves Me’!!!

    • Are you thinking of a specific verse reference on this one?

  5. Umm I was kinda thinking I John 4:8 but then maybe not lol

    • OK. If this were the only passage that spoke of God’s love for us, I’d certainly list it here. But (thankfully!) there are quite a few references on the topic, making it harder to pin down a specific pertinent passage where there aren’t specific allusions.

  6. Another good one is “Shadows Behind Me” by the Dartts.

    • Don’t think I’ve ever heard that song. What passage would you associate it with?

  7. The Blood of Jesus
    Collingsworth family
    1 John 1:7

    Stepping in the light
    Gaither Homecoming Friends
    1 John 1:7

    We Shall Behold Him
Sandy Patti (or is it Sandi Patty?)
    1 John 3:2

    • Sandi Patti (simple name, yet complicated for my feeble brain, which seems to rely more on gongle nowadays

      • Google doesn’t know everything! She goes by Sandi Patty today. She went by Sandi Patti in the 1980s for a number of years, rolling along with a printer’s error, before deciding to reclaim the actual spelling somewhere around 1994.

      • Ah! Google has failed (and embarrassed) me! Thanks for the info Daniel, I remember her talking about the printer’s error, don’t remember exactly where, maybe on Gaither’s Best of Sandi Patty video?

      • Perhaps! I’ve never seen that video, though, so I don’t know.

  8. Hey Daniel since “Sweet Victory” by the McKameys is on there then the classic ‘Victory is Sweet’ could go on there as well right? Of course the Inspirations and Singing Cooke Family recorded it as well. And someone else recently Steve posted about it on his blog a while back.
