3:1 Review: I’ve Been Blessed (Simpson Family)

I Have Been Blessed (Simpson Family)3:1 Reviews offer three highlights of an album and one area that could have been improved.

1. Original Songs: Sisters Hope and Sabrina Simpson are the daughters of Southern Gospel songwriter Rick Simpson. According to his biography, around twenty groups have recorded his songs, including Karen Peck & New River, the Singing Cooks, and Revelation. He wrote or co-wrote six of the ten songs.

2: “Pray Through Me”: Lyrically and vocally, this is the project’s strongest song.

3: “The Greatest Wonder”: Of the Rick Simpson songs on this project, this may be the most familiar; it was recorded on Revelation’s 2010 project Across the Lands, which we gave a five-star rating here. It’s another one of this project’s strongest tracks.

:1: Duo Harmonies: The vocals would have been stronger with a third voice to complete the chords. There are third voices at points, some of which apparently go uncredited. (Joseph Habedank puts in a guest appearance on “You’re the Answer to My Prayers,” but the guest male vocalist on “I’ve Got It” is uncredited.)

Traditional or Progressive: Middle-of-the-road.

Credits: Produced by Adam Kohout. Engineer: Tim Wade. Musicians: Adam Kohout (Piano, Keyboards, B3 Organ, Wurlitzer, Rhodes, Synth), Jeremy Medkiff (Bass Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar), Garth Justice (Drums, Percussion, Loops), David Johnson (Fiddle, Steel, Resonator Guitar, Mandolin, Harmonica, Banjo, Cello)

Song List: He Will Always See You Through; I Have Been Blessed; I Got It; Somebody’s Gonna Stand; Pray Through Me; Memories Only Prove; Hold On; Open Arms; The Greatest Wonder; You’re the Answer To My Prayers; Hope & Sabrina’s First Practice.
