Saturday News Roundup #137

Worth Knowing

  • Canton Junction will be recording a live video at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas tomorrow night.
  • NQC Executive Vice President Clarke Beasley broke his hip in a recent car accident. [EDIT, 2/21/13: Broken link removed.] The accident was so bad that the first responders had to cut him out of his car.
  • The Gatlinburg Gathering is moving to July.
  • Daywind announced a new trio, Watts, Rowsey & Bean. It’s a mixed trio composed of Perrys alumnus Nicole Watts, Karen Peck & New River alumnus John Darin Rowsey, and … no, no, the third member is not McKameys bass singer Ruben Bean. It’s soloist Gina Bean.

Worth Reading

  • It turns out that the Gaither Vocal Band’s Pure and Simple album, releasing Tuesday, might be pure but is not exactly simple. Different versions of the album, with differing song lists, are being released in different venues. David Bruce Murray breaks the whole situation down, and even explains the least expensive method of getting all of the songs. [EDIT, 3/16/13: Broken link removed.]

Worth Watching

What could be a better way to head into National Quartet Convention week than with a video of an early version of the group that started “the Granddaddy of them all”?

17 Letters to the Editor

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. Well, since the Dove’s had the biggest responses of this week’s posts, I wonder if anyone knows why they were originally scheduled for two nights of NQC this year and now they are not scheduled at all?
Also, the group that started the NQC wasn’t just the Blackwoods. J.D. credits himself and James for having the idea in his autobiography.

    • At the time JD was with the Blackwood Bros…1956. BUT, that is a good question about the Dove Bros.

  2. @Promoter Paul

There was an open thread on another blog a few weeks ago and the Dove Brothers were mentioned. McCray was posting responses to some of the comments and I asked about the NQC this year. I copied the conversation below:

Daniel Mount. If we are not allowed to copy from other blogs and repost I understand if the passages below don’t get posted.

Well its been a long time since I’ve posted something on here. But I do read this site because some of the comments are entertaining and some comments are pretty rough but it is a free country! Speaking of Country! Many of you in Blog land have heard that the Dove Brothers are going Country. Let me answer your questions. Yes and No! We are doing some shows that we do Classic Clean Positive Country Songs. We don’t do Drinking songs or cheating song but we will sing songs that deal with real life and songs that tell the story of how true love should be!

I love my family but like all families we have our ups and downs and that’s life, But if we can bring a positive light on the family or relationships then would you say that a Pastor does the same thing when he preaches a sermon on the family! But folks will think and believe what they want and that’s fine have at it!

We sing Southern Gospel in. every show and we do something that some of you like and some of you don’t ! We ENTERTAIN but with a MESSAGE! I wouldn’t sing nothing I wouldn’t sing in a Church and we have perform that’s the way love goes in many Churches! And people love it! We are the Dove Brothers not the Statesmen not the Cathedrals not the Oaks We are the Dove Brothers Band!

So check out some of the shows we are doing like the Americana Tour ! Honoring the Veteran and American Music! Also come to Kinston NC Oct 13 and see The Dixie Melody Boys, Dove Brothers Band and The DMB Band Reunion! That’s gonna be a great night! Hey folks We are still a Gospel QT with a five pIece BAND we still sing our Gospel hits and still sing some Classic Gospel Standards! We just broaden our fan base and venues! We will always do our best to represent Christ in all we do and perform All we ask from you are your prayers!

I think it’s great! If you are able to also give the gospel in the new venues then you are following our Lord’s example of tending to the sick. The typical SG concert crowd is “healthy” and we are suppose to be a light in the dark world around us.

I read that DBB will not be at NQC. Was that your choice? Did this expansion into country music have anything to do with it?

I pray the Lord will continue to bless the DBB!

Post 108. I don’t think so. DBB and NQC could not come to terms on the price. It was nothing personal just business! I pray they have the best NQC ever! Now I. Am excited about Memphis!!!!

    • Enlightening repost of McCray’s comments. I understand the price side of the NQC/artist relationship.

  3. Did I miss a GVB announcement? Is David Phelps gone or is his hair black now and he is unrecognizeable on the cover?

    • He has a new hairdo. 🙂 This wouldn’t be the first time he has changed hairdos! 🙂

  4. Speaking of hairdos it ain’t gonna be long I’m gonna rethink mine. I would do a comb- over but when I do the hair I swoop over with is bald underneath there too.

  5. Daniel, do you play to live-blog evening concerts at the NQC again this year? I will be in attendance on Thursday and Friday night this year. I’m looking forward to another great convention! 🙂

    • I’ll certainly be doing some level of coverage! I definitely won’t be live-blogging on Friday, though, because I’ll be on site, first at the book signing and then accompanying Miss Dianne to an assortment of interviews (though I’ll be blending into the background and not saying anything in the actual interviews themselves!)

  6. Has the NQC 2012 nightly schedule – with performance order and times – been posting anywhere online to this point? It usually is posted somewhere. Any guidance would be appreciated.

    • It is usually posted on the night of the event, shortly before festivities begin.

    • They were unbelievably good. I am glad that at least this much video footage survived!

  8. The report about the GVB Pure And Simple CD is inaccurate. Walmart is selling the same version. I checked today. Thanks.

    • Online or on a store shelf?

      • Store shelf… looked at the song list… its the exact same as the ones everywhere else.

      • OK!
