Shelley Blackwood to leave Blackwood Singers

Shortly before Christmas, Ron Blackwood announced that he would be launching the Blackwood Quartet, a full-time touring group featuring tenor John Rulapaugh, lead Josh Garner, baritone Tracy Trent, bass Trent Adams, and pianist Joe Cox. Ron Blackwood will be the emcee and a featured soloist on select songs.

Ron and his wife Shelley Blackwood had been part of the Blackwood Singers in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and that announcement left the Blackwood Singers’ future up in the air. Ron and Shelley sent out a press release announcing that she is pursuing a Bachelors’ degree in Nursing, and has been accepted into Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society for Nurses.

Ron and Shelley will be leaving the Blackwood singers, but Ron’s brother R.W. Blackwood and his wife Donna plan to keep that group going.

So for the time being, it looks like there will be four Blackwood groups: Jimmy Blackwood’s Blackwood Brothers Quartet (Jimmy is the son of James Blackwood), Mark Blackwood’s Blackwood Gospel Quartet (Mark is the son of Cecil), Ron Blackwood’s Blackwood Quartet (Ron is the son of R.W. Blackwood Sr.), and R.W. Blackwood’s Blackwood Singers (R.W. is the son of R.W. Sr.)

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. Things that make you go “Hmm…”

  2. I know some people scratch their heads and don’t understand why there are so many Blackwood groups, or find it very confusing…I say more power to the Blackwood family. As they did after James left the Blackwood Bros, and called it the Cecil Blackwood Bros., just refer to them in that way. The Ron Blackwood Qt., the RW Blackwood Singers, the Mark Blackwood Gospel Qt., and the Jimmy Blackwood Brothers. Simple huh?

  3. Trying to keep the Blackwood stuff straight makes my head swim! Oh and don’t forget Blackwood Legacy, a former Blackwood singer using the name for his group…
    ….here a Blackwood, there a Blackwood, everywhere a Blackwood…:)

  4. That is true…I completely forgot about Rick Price’s group “Blackwood Legacy.” So we need to include to my list the RICK PRICE BLACKWOOD LEGACY (trio).

  5. I heard Rick Price just use to drive the bus. Hmm…

  6. ^ and you’d be in an awfully good position to hear the truth, too!

  7. It’s possible I could have “misunderstood”, but that’s what I thought I heard anyway.

    • No Rick did not just drive the bus. He started out helping out by driving (they all took turns driving) and working the product table, then he started opening the show for them as a soloist and when Pat Hoffmaster left Rick started singing with the group and sang with them on and off for several years until Cecil’s death. Then Rick and Chris Blackwood started Blackwood Legacy. Chris left the group to spend more time at home because he and his wife were expecting a baby.

  8. OK.

  9. Rick Price sang with Cecil, Jimmy, and Ken during the 80’s…and then with the last “Cecil Blackwood” Brothers during the late 1990’s, until Cecil died in 2000. Not sure where you go that info…I heard Rick sing many times. He may have originally been a bus driver, but sang solos until joining the quartet. Actually there was another man who traveled with them in the 80’s that was the bus driver…his name at the moment escapes me.

    • The bus driver for the Blackwood Brothers which was Ken T, Pat H, Jimmy B, Cecil B, Tommy F & James B was Bill Garner. Rick Price sang during intermission, or beginning of 2nd 1/2 and ran the sound.

  10. Well, according to Blackwood Legacy’s website – the group originally started with one Blackwood, Chris Blackwood. Also, there are pictures showing Rick Price singing with Cecil’s Blackwood Brothers.

However, Chris has been gone for some amount of time now, (I couldn’t find out exactly how long on the website). So, that being said – Blackwood Legacy, run by Rick Price, is the only group out there proudly waving the Blackwood name around without actually having a Blackwood in it.

  11. Yes, that is true. There is no Blackwood in the group. Chris Blackwood left right after Blackwood Legacy was organized.

  12. So of what relation was Chris to James or Cecil?

  13. Chris is Cecil’s grandson…Mark’s son.

  14. I say, great to all no matter what name they use. As long as they are all singing for the glory of God, just thank all of them for their undieing willingness to sing for souls.

    Matthew 6:33

  15. Amen, Chuck!

  16. WOW….just listening to you guys brings back memories…I’m not sure If its from memory or from the VHS’s that I used to play over and over and wish I was part of. I’m heading to Nashville the 1st weekend of March, I would LOVE to meet up with some of you if you are available….Last time we talked was the first time I met Craig since I was young….he never contacted me again until him and his wife “supposedly” had problems…coming from a “christian” home…I couldn’t imagine leaving my family…..I don’t know if any of you have any contact with him, but I guess I have ALOT of unanswered questions….IF someone could please get ahold of me and at least email with me back and forth then maybe I could get over the abandonment that I’ve felt all these years….I watch you guys perform online and It brought tears to my eyes….of all the things we rememeber in life, its funny how I recognize you guys and automatically think your family…I have NO memory of craig’s side of family….My daughter has been sick since she was born, she’s now 3… I need to know family history…But don’t want to talk to him…please understand. Thanks and hoping to hear from someone soon….

  18. I played Bass Guitar for Ron in the 80s. stop picking on them!!!! He is a good man!

  19. I noticed I am late on replying to these comments but none the less I want to set everything straight. I am RW and Donna Blackwood’s daughter,Cecil’s neice, Ron’s neice, Mark’s cousin, but am not related to Rick Price. There are a lot of Blackwood groups out there since there have been a lot of Blackwood’s born and given the gift of singing for the Lord. All of them are men except for the Blackwood Singers and that’s because my mom, Donna, myself, and Kaye Blackwood are the only females in the family that sing. Lots of members over the years! As for Rick Price’s group Blackwood Legacy, it is a misrepresentation. It is not recognized by any of the other legitimate family groups and not quite sure why he can’t travel and sing under the Rick Price group name instead of using our family name. That’s like me forming a group and calling myself the Elvis Presley Connection Quartet just because my family went to church with him. Kinda silly right? I don’t wish any bad for this group it’s just not proper, courteous, or right to our family for our name to be used in a misrepresenting form, when no “born Blackwood” gave their blessing on this group. It doesn’t look good for the kingdom of God when there is no truth being told in the churches and to precious people this group in front of. We are praying and letting the Lord handle this situation for us because he does a much better job.

  20. Ok! I have just spent the last 30 minutes looking at the Blackwood Legacy website. As of now my cousin Daniel Childs is a big part of the group, and a very good singer. As long as a Blackwood is a part of this group there is no problem and may they be blessed. However my last post was based on the fact of the status of the group when Chris left and I thought Daniel was no longer in the group. So I re-cant! Daniel is representing the family well!

  21. iJUST SAW THE BLACKWOOD SINGERS AT PIGEON FORGE AND HAD A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE AT THEIR BREAKFAST PERFORMANCE. WHAT A BLESSING TO HEAR THEM AND MEET THEM. MY PRAYERS GO OUT FOR DONNA AND YOU HAVE TO RESPECT PEOPLE WHO GO ON SINGING FOR THE LORD NO MATTER THE PERSONAL COST TO THEMSELVES. I AM SURE THEIR FOREFATHERS ARE VERY PROUD OF THEM. MAY GOD BLESS THEM ALL RICHLY WHO ARE SINGING FOR HIS GLORY.
