13 Letters to the Editor

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. I love hymns projects. My favorite, to date, is the Gaither trio hymn project from 20 plus years ago. If the GVB project even comes close to that it will be worth the purchase. I’m glad it includes the old group. A great way to close out that chapter.

  2. Daniel, do you know if the GVB Hymns is strictly the group that is on the front cover? I was listening to a couple of clips online and I heard a voice that I did not recognize. It is hard to tell from a 30 second clip.

    • It’s marketed as the five guys on the cover. I haven’t heard that, so that’s all I know.

    • Looking at the liner notes on the CD it lists BGV contributors as Angie Primm, Gayle ?, Chip Davis and Ben Isaacs. Can’t remember which song right now but can definitely hear BGV’s included on that one. It is a great album but some of the arrangements are very slow. There are only a couple of uptempo songs…I’ll fly Away being one of them. This hymns album is nothing like the earlier Gaither Trio album. That one used more ornate orchestrations and was pretty much a straight-forward presentation of the songs. This current one is definitely a David Phelps production complete with complicated arrangements and creative harmonies. I love both albums but could have wished for some of the songs to be sped up a bit. I will be interested in reading the reviews of this one by those who are not real fans of Gaither especially the Michael English critics because Michael is all over this one and his contributions are definitely signature Michael (which I love…what can I say…I am a fan). I can now see why Bill Gaither released this one as originally recorded because if he has taken out Mark and Michael (especially Michael) he would have either had to scrap the album altogether or start from scratch and I, for one, am glad to have this one. One interesting note is that Wes was once again pretty much missing in features. I hope Bill uses Wes more in the future because he is a real asset to the VB.

      • Downloaded “Love Lifted Me” from iTunes today. A Michael English master piece as well. Makes me hate that he ever left, but I’m looking forward to the new group.

Love Lifted Me has a blues feel. The slower tempo reminded me of Jim Hamill clips I’ve heard. Don’t go buy the song expecting Jim Hamill and the Kingsmen, that’s not what I’m saying. I’ve enjoyed hearing Jim put his soul into this song and enjoyed Michael’s bluesy feel as well.

On a side note. Everybody in SG needs to get their music on iTunes. If nothing else, the ability to hear short clips is a good way to introduce your music. I don’t think the market for SG will ever go away, but a failure to have the abiliity for people like me (who don’t go to concerts and don’t buy a lot of complete albums) to have easy access to your music will jepordize the viability going forward. There are some SG artists that I’ve never bought any of their music in a store, but I have grabbed a song here and there off iTunes, or similar venue, after hearing it on Pandora or YouTube or on a SG blog. It needs to be that Daniel is soon forced to put a link to iTunes or the Google Play Store or Amazon for a digital download for every CD that hits the market.

  3. Does anyone know why the new BF&A album’s street date keeps changing?

  4. Couple of questions Daniel…..

    1) Any news on if the Gather Vocal Band is already in the studio putting out a new project with Todd & Adam yet and if so is there a projected release date yet?

    2) Any news on a Jubilee 4 project?

  5. Just a little tip for you spotify users: The Gaither Vocal Band Hymns project is on spotify to listen to. Its very good, but a little too slow paced (imho). It is definitely the group that is on the cover of the album.

  6. Question: Any news on The Martins new project yet?

  7. You can listen to the whole GVB album on myspace.com at https://myspace.com/gaithervocalband/music/albums

  8. In response to JSR, another way to hear new artists are from Southern Gospel Radio. You may not only hear a new artist’s first hit on the chart, but the station might also play other songs from the album.

Not every station will play album cut that aren’t hit songs, but I can recommend one that does….www.affirmsoutherngospelradio.com! I had to get the shameless plug in !

    • The local SG station is on the presets on my car radio. I also have listened to some regional stations via iHeartRadio. I have found that SG radio can be hit or miss. Our local station recently went through some changes and the quality of the music they play has greatly improved.
