Sony’s Thoughts: Idols

“Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)

“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” (Exodus 34:14)

“And Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Get thee behind me, satan: for it is written, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.”‘” (Luke 4:8)

A few weeks ago, while going through a very dark time, I began to ask God to show me things in my life that displease Him. True to form, He did and, as usual, I didn’t like what He showed me but I am thankful that, in mercy, He does take time to point things out so I can change and grow closer to Him.

I feel like there were a couple things in my life that I had unknowingly begun to idolize. They weren’t bad things and, in fact, they were things God had given me but I found that my whole world was wrapped around those things and that, without them, I would be nothing (or so I thought).

How merciful for God to point those out so that I can repent and turn to Him again wholeheartedly, thanking Him for His many blessings but aware that, if He removes those blessings, it really doesn’t matter because I still have Him. In proper perspective, nothing can rock my world. Friends may forsake me; family may let me down; everything I hold dear on earth may disappear; but God remains and it’s Him I’m leaning on.

Who or what are you worshiping? Are you worshiping and serving God only, or are people and things taking more priority?

3 Letters to the Editor

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. What a wonderful and appropriate break your Sunday column is from the news about people and to the Good News. Your weekly, inspiring contributions to Daniel’s excellent news and commentary are surely complimentary and bring balance to his varied posts. Keep up the good work.

    • Thank you so much for that encouragement. My prayer has been that God will use my writing to encourage others and to draw them closer to Him. He is so good and so faithful, and I feel honored that He would choose to use me in this way.

  2. I have read your posting through three times and the more I thought about it, is it touched me in my heart. You said everything so beautifully, it cannot be commented on to even make it any better. Your postings are always self explanatory, so wonderful, you are right on when you said to be as close to God as possible. I sure do agree with you, but I couldn’t say it as good as you. Thank You from the bottom of my heart.May you be as close toGod as you Need to be. It makes a person think. Again thank you and may God Bless You and be close to you always.
