Testing a New Theme

We’ve had the current theme here for several years, so I thought it might be time for a facelift.

What do you think?

(I have not moved all the sidebars yet. I figured that would wait until I decided whether this was a keeper.)

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. Daniel, I like it. The dark background makes everything else stand out. The format is easy to read and navigate. I think it is a keeper. 🙂

  2. So far I really am not too fond of this layout.

  3. Used to the old but could probably adjust 🙂

  4. Too dark, imo, but I’ll try to adjust. 🙂

  5. Don’t care for it so much…hard to find the blog post titles, and it seems to look a bit more cluttery or something. But I won’t stop reading it because of that! You asked…I answered! 🙂

  6. not a real fan…sorry!

  7. Daniel, Daniel, Daniel….have we not learned anything this week? People don’t like change. Gold City has changed. EHSS and KPNR have changed. The SN Fan Awards is changing and now this! We, the people, cannot handle any more change!

LOL! Just joking! Personally, I think I like the old format better, but I’m like everyone else. We’ll still keep reading.

  8. I like the fact that it is a sleeker, more modern look. I agree with the one who mentioned the post titles. In the old format they were big and bold…now they’re not as prominent. My other problems with it are just because it’s new, and I can get used to things being in different places. So I don’t say give up on change, just bigger headers on the post would be nice.

  9. I’ll see what I can do. 🙂

  10. Actually, I like it. It looks a bit smoother.

But I can see what the others are saying too. A lot of people don’t care for change. So perhaps you should stick with something close to the older theme that has some updated features.

Although I really like the features of this new layout! To me, it’s cool!!!!

  11. Two more things I noticed…it won’t let me “reply” to someone else’s comment. It says: “ERROR:Can’t find the ‘commentformid’ div.”

Also, I use the “most recent comments” thing a lot. I know you said you weren’t finished, but I thought I’d put that input in.

  12. Brian – not sure threaded comments will work. I’ll sure try!

Most recent comments is definitely coming back!

  13. Hey, I see if anyone doesn’t like the background, you can change it. Doesn’t change the layout, but if you don’t care for the dark, you have a few other options. Click on that pencil on the bottom, and do “Change Theme”.

  14. I agree that it may be time for an update…just not loving this one:)
    But I keep reading!

  15. Hey, that “change theme” option is awesome!

  16. I like the fact that I can change the theme myself.

  17. I don’t care for it.

  18. I love change because it creates either consternation or excitement.
Serious speaking, we need a lbold like text for the headline captions.
    Keep up the good work.

  19. Daniel, I don’t care a lot for this new theme. It is pretty to glance at, but I think it may be too busy for a blog, especially a southern gospel blog. Also, I’m at work on a super fast internet connection, running a brand new install of Windows 7, and the page takes FOREVER to load completely.

  20. Awwww, Daniel,
Very classy! Love the way the dark background makes everything stand out!
I like it! I just hope I can figure everything out being alittle ‘puter challenged’!
    lol Lovin it!

  21. Nice Daniel I really like it! 🙂

  22. It loads perfectly fine for me. Fast and easy. I like the change, and I love that we can change our own backgrounds. It will take some getting used to, but I do like it. I miss the most recent comments section, however, and the side boxes being in bold, as others have said. I hope those features will return. Nice job, Daniel!

  23. Not so crazy about this format!! But I’ll get used to it if I have to!!

  24. OK … I like the old one better. It probably is just that I couldn’t figure out what site I’d opened when I clicked over to this tab! I can see that there are some neat things about this one, and it’s more modern and everything … but it really does feel like a different place entirely! It kind of feels like everything is loose and floating around, with the boxes! 😆

  25. I really like the new layout … not crazy about the IM client look but the features are great … the main column needs to be “minimized” by default … that will make it have the feel of the older theme. I like how the text stands out and the comments alternate colors … easier on the eyes to read.

    Good one!

  26. I prefer the old theme. This one makes me think I’m reading like a star trek blog

  27. I’m not crazy about this layout. The colors don’t bother me, but the faux “Start” button pops up an overlay when the page first loads, and that’s annoying.

  28. And what’s wrong with star trek? 😉

    I love it!

  29. Haha nothings wrong with star trek. But I do feel like the old theme fitted the blog better.

  30. I prefer the other one… I like these colors but not the style.

  31. Daniel I LOVE this theme!
    keep it 🙂

  32. Daniel, you know how some of us are with change…:O But I’m neutral on it. I’ll still read everyday, as long as you don’t make one of those weird font sites…lol.

  33. This isn’t a final decision, necessarily, but I think I’ll go back for now.

I may revisit this one eventually.

  34. It feels like I have “come home” now that you have changed it back…comfortable, warm, and inviting. 🙂

    • Yup, it’s so comfortable here that it took a minute to register that the other had gone away! 😀

      • 🙂

By the way, I wouldn’t put things like this up to a question if I wasn’t OK with an answer of “no.”

      • I’m not sure why we Americans think that everything must be run like a democracy before we’re happy (1/2 jk), but I think you can tell your readers appreciate that their feedback counts.

I understand the need to stay up-to-date and make changes … but seriously, I find even the color scheme here “warm” and “inviting.” I know it isn’t easy to “change gradually,” either … keep experimenting when you feel like it!

  35. Well, glad it feels that way again!

Perhaps I’ll have better success with the next one . . . honestly, I suspected this design might go too far, but I just had to try!

  36. I like it…I like it …I like it !

  37. Thanks for putting it back….

  38. Thanks for returning Daniel, this one is just much easier to read and navigate.
