Testing a New Design, #4 (of 5)

I’ve settled on this one and one other as the remaining finalists. What do you think of this one? Please share your opinion in the poll and/or the comments. Thanks!

A couple of notes:

  • Yes, I can and will make the text darker (and, if needed, larger) if this theme is selected.
  • Yes, I can and will change the logo if this theme is selected.
  • Yes, I can and will move our favorite sidebars to the winning theme.
  • Yes, I know the thumbnail for the random posts and the featured articles isn’t working properly yet. I’ll work with it if we pick this theme.

One other interesting note: This theme does have a display-as-blog option. I’ve enabled the news website option since I have been seeing this as more a news website and less a blog in recent years. (Moving it to a blog option removes the top posts, recent comments, and category boxes.) If this theme is the overall winner, I may test that.

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. I really like this layout. It’s easy to navigate.

  2. Daniel, looks like this one is a keeper? highest ‘good’ score so far and 0% ambivalent – which means everybody has a reaction +/-!

cleanest appearance, easy to navigate, best overall so far? probably Yes!

  3. Thanks!

I just now found out that this one doesn’t seem to support threaded comments. I would have to build that functionality back in if I kept it!

    • Threaded comments are back! 🙂

  4. If you could use black type it would be great. It is very hard to read. Like the layout.

  5. As I mentioned in the post, I’ll certainly be darkening the font if this one’s the keeper.

  6. I’m not crazy about this one at all. Seems kinda harsh to me. I think that it’s the particular shade of blue that just rubs me the wrong way! I like the “popular posts” section.

    • I tested green throughout the day, and I’m testing purple now. Red’s the last choice.

  7. Green is an option. 🙂

  8. A Keeper! Nice Design! I think I liked the blue better that I saw last night…but this is the nicest I have seen so far!

    • I think blue beats green, too. The green was too light.

  9. I like it…

It’s smooth and clean. Functions nicely too.

    • It’s functioning better now, with thumbnails and threaded comments fixed. 🙂

  10. thumbs up!

  11. This is a very nice layout. It’s clean, and easy to find the features. In my book, “clean and efficient” trumps “cute” or “decorative”. I also am one who liked the blue that I saw last night better than this green. But that’s just a minor preference. Yes–in addition to darkening the text, it would be great if it were just a bit larger. Thanks for allowing your constituency to have some input! 🙂

  12. No problem, and thanks for the feedback!

  13. I like this one fairly well. With the changes you indicate you’d make if you kept this design I think I could handle it. I do hope you’d figure out how to fix the threaded comments though… it is much neater and easier to follow that way.

  14. What’s wrong with what you have? lol
I know, with everything comes change.

  15. Daniel, this is the one, most definitely! SO easy to navigate and find things! Wonderful!

  16. Like it!

  17. lol… it wouldn’t let me vote twice. 🙂

  18. Hmm, I guess I’m the first one to be ambivalent! It’s a “familiar face” as far as reading it is concerned … somehow the layout seems similar. The menus seem sharp and crisp (a good thing IMO).

I don’t really like the “popular posts” idea – I am tired to death of some of those! 😆 I liked yesterday’s theme better, but couldn’t say why.

P.S. I definitely don’t think you ought to commit yourself to following the polls … your comment about making the final decision yourself seems sensible to me.

  19. This one isn’t bad.

The only drawback I can see from a layout perspective is that there’s a lot of wasted space in the right column that isn’t being used.

  20. DBM – knowing me, I’ll fill that space easily and quickly!

Amy – I will probably make the final decision. But I’ll take into account overall reaction and anything that didn’t work. I don’t like “popular posts,” either. I’d want to pull that.

lovelife – I’ve probably said it at least once per thread now, but the old design’s compatibility with the content management system was out of date 5 or 6 versions ago. It is getting harder and harder to make it work. 🙂

Ellen – Yes, Clean and Efficient wins. 🙂

  21. This is the one Daniel!

  22. The thumbnails are working now!

  23. I like the layout. Not a fan of the purple, though. 🙂

    • I shouldn’t have let you all know there were multiple colors! 😮 😆

  24. OK, I’m closing the poll and the comments now, in preparation for the imminent launch and test of the final option.
