UPDATE: Dove Brothers post soundtracks for Life …then pull them

Jerry Martin just sent out an email newsletter announcing that he’d just made the soundtracks from their Life project available for download from their store. [EDIT, 11/8/10: The link is broken and has been removed.] What makes this move unusual and noteworthy is that this is perhaps the first time in Southern Gospel history where a Southern Gospel group has released soundtracks for a project even before the project was released.

The Dove Brothers themselves haven’t yet received Life, though they did approve final proofs last week.

UPDATE (2/22/08, 1:39 PM): That was short-lived. Jerry Martin just sent out another email newsletter, that he has pulled the soundtrack downloads for now.

2 Letters to the Editor

Southern Gospel Journal welcomes letters to the editor. We will post the most thoughtful and insightful submissions. Ground rules: Don't attack or belittle groups or fellow posters, or advance heresies rejected by orthodox Christianity. Do keep comments positive, constructive, and on topic.
  1. I have to hand it to them on this set of moves. I haven’t been paying $15 for whole projects by DBQ for the last few years, simply because my “more favorite” groups are higher on my wish list and I can’t get everything I want. So they really are attracting business they wouldn’t have received, in my case, by making downloads of individual songs available at very reasonable prices.

Also, they have “internet radio” available now, so I can go to their website and listen to a song and see if I like it … My brother and I devoted a lot more attention to them a week or two ago than we would have without that.

Like it or not, it’s the way the world turns now-a-days, and it’s becoming necessary in order to stay competitive. I think it’s also a smart business move, if only because (I would assume) they get a higher share of the profit than they would by selling through iTunes. It looks like a win-win to me. 🙂

  2. I wasn’t commenting on tracks, actually … I didn’t read their email closely enough, I guess! I was referring to their whole online store setup, if that wasn’t clear. I think you posted about that once before, Daniel.
