More Details on GVB Reunion

Over the past few days, more details have been mentioned about the upcoming Gaither Vocal Band Reunion taping. Wes Hampton posted on his blog that it would be a closed taping: [EDIT, 11/8/10: The link appears to be down, and has been removed.]

I know there’s been speculation on all of this, but I do know that it will be a closed taping. I’m anxious to see what Bill has up his sleeve. I know that he’ll make it a very memorable, fun, exciting time for everyone involved, and I’m so glad to have the amazing opportunity to be involved in this…it is quite humbling, actually. I know that folks, especially the hard core GVB fans (like myself), will be in line to get this video when it’s released.

In an interview for the Lakeland, FL Ledger, Bill Gaither also mentioned one other crucial detail:

“This summer, we’re going to record a Vocal Band reunion video. We’ll get 15 alumni of the band to reminisce and sing,” he said.

Among those alumni are singers who have had their own successful careers, like Mark Lowry, David Phelps and Russ Taff. Gaither allowed himself to guess what the alums of the band might say of its continuing success.

“There’s a lot of pride in all that. I think they’d say it’s good to see the old man is trying to keep the quality up,” he said.

What Gaither didn’t say is which fifteen alumni will be present, or whether that number includes the four present members.

  1. I’m excited about this! I really hope Steve Green and Gary McFadden will be in the 15.

  2. Either way, they be in the project.
Live or from the archives in the Gaither’s miles of video tapes.

  3. 15 Alumni?

I only count 14…and that does not include the members of the present group. It’s 13 if you take out Lemuel Miller who joined and left within a year.

    Who is Bill counting here?

  4. Then perhaps he is counting the members of the present group, and omitting a few who didn’t stay long.

  5. I suspect there’s some estimating going on. I doubt Gaither stopped in the middle of an interview to count up the exact number on his fingers.

  6. I am sure that the current GVB members will be involved and I am sure they were one of the 15 but I could be wrong.

  7. Does anyone know what happend to Gary McFadden who sang with the Bill Gathier Trio years ago. I purchased an album that gary McFadden made it it had a song on it about Angels. He said is and part of the words were There all around me, above my beneath me they are all around me. He was singing about angels. I have tried to research him and can not find anything on him. If anyone know of hos whereaboust please contact me at Thanks for your help…

    • He recently had his house flooded for a second time in a few years. He does some preaching I think. He used to have his own site (I presume he still does) and he has a couple of Facebook pages. He had previously filled in for Jake in the Statesmen, then went to the Oak Ridge Boys as baritone around 1962 when Ron Page left. He then left I believe at the end of 1963 because he was handpicked by Hess to be the original baritone in the Imperials. Later he replaced Danny Gaither in the Gaither Trio and later was the original lead singer of the Gaither Vocal Band until around 1985 when Bill stepped down to bass and Gary to baritone. He also had a solo career, wrote or co-wrote some good songs.

Later he had his own SG shows that he emceed and sang in. His sister is married to Dino.

  8. If it helps, his name is actually Gary McSpadden, not Gary McFadden.
