FridayNightRevival launches Revival Awards

Southern Gospel blogger FridayNightRevival has launched an online awards ballot intended to honor those who participate in Southern Gospel in ways not covered by the Singing News Fan Awards. A more detailed explanation, and the first ballot, is here.

In the interest of full disclosure: I am part of the advisory board, which selects nominees.

NQC Straw Poll to open today

Singing News announced several months ago that, in addition to the official Singing News Fan Awards at Dollywood this fall, they will be conducting a straw poll among attendees at September’s National Quartet Convention. They will announce these straw poll results in the NQC/Singing News Fan Awards Nominee Showcase on Saturday, September 17th.

NQC attendees will cast votes for the straw poll winners. In addition to on-site votes cast, Singing News will be accepting straw poll votes on Facebook starting today. If you are on Facebook, you will be able to cast your vote on NQC’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/NQConline, starting Monday. (Hat tip, Collingsworth Family.) [EDIT, 6/18/12: Broken link removed.]

Over 20,000 people attend NQC, and there are over 10,000 fans on NQC’s Facebook page. The (presumable) ease of casting votes could result in an immense number of votes cast, and fans tend to care more about polls in which they have cast votes. So should this split arrangement continue for several years, it would not be hard at all to see a straw poll win counted to be at least as prestigious as an official Fan Awards win.

Southern Gospel winners at 2011 Dove Awards

The Dove Awards were announced last night in Atlanta. [EDIT, 2/22/13: Broken link removed.] Southern Gospel-related winners include:

  • Song of the Year: “Sometimes I Cry,” Jason Crabb, written by Gerald Crabb
  • Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year: “Better Day,” Greatly Blessed, Gaither Vocal Band
  • Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year: “Mountaintop,” Straight From the Heart of Dixie, Little Roy and Lizzie Long
  • Southern Gospel Album of the Year: Greatly Blessed, Gaither Vocal Band
  • Bluegrass Album of the Year: Singing From the Heart, Dailey & Vincent

Most notable, of course, is the fact that a Southern Gospel artist’s song won the overall Song of the Year award. Michael English’s “In Christ Alone” won in 1994, and Sandi Patti’s “We Shall Behold Him,” penned by Dottie Rambo, won in 1982; however, though both had Southern Gospel connections, both songs achieved their radio airplay and notoriety on Contemporary Christian music stations and charts. Therefore, last night’s Song of the Year was the first going to a song recorded by an artist primarily known as a Southern Gospel artist since the Couriers’ “Statue of Liberty” won in 1976 (and, h/t Wes, the Blackwood Brothers’ “Learning to Lean” won in 1977).

Grammy® Awards eliminates Southern Gospel category

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), organizer of the Grammy® Awards, cut their awards categories from 109 to 78 today. One of the categories eliminated was “Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album.”

Albums which would previously have been nominated in that category will now be eligible to be nominated under a broader general Christian/Gospel category.

The NARAS’s full list of changes is here.

Accounting Firm to certify Singing News Fan Awards

Southern Gospel was born in an era when men could go to the bank on a word and a handshake. Singing News was founded by men of this era. The magazine staff has always counted Fan Awards votes internally.

This was appropriate for that era, yet we are in a new era. We are in the era where the rare bad apple leads skeptics to question everything. Major awards shows in other genres have had external accounting firms audit and certify their results for years. Over the last few years, voices within Southern Gospel have quietly been calling for Singing News to do the same. It’s (typically) less that they question the staff and more that external certification is now the expectation for any prestigious awards show.

This, then, is the historical context for a significant announcement today on Singing News Publisher Les Butler’s blog. He stated:

In other Fan Awards news, today we are announcing yet another first. The 2011 Singing News Fan Awards will be certified by Rayburn, Betts and Bates Accounting of Brentwood, Tennessee. Danny and I have been working on this for a while, as this brings yet another layer of professionalism and accountability to a magazine and an organization that will not have it any other way.

Bravo, Singing News. Great move.

Singing News posts 2011 Fan Awards top 10 nominations

Singing News posted their 2011 Singing News Fan Awards top ten nominations this morning.

The biggest surprise was a pleasant one: Tribute Quartet tenor Riley Harrison Clark picked up three nominations, for Young Artist, Horizon Individual, and Tenor of the Year. Yes, that’s right, Tenor of the Year. He joined Tribute on June 30th of last year – nine months ago – and is, if my memory serves me correctly, the first member of Tribute Quartet to pick up a top 10 nomination for any of the four vocal parts. This proves that the online buzz about Clark isn’t just online buzz—or, alternatively, that online buzz is now enough to garner a top 10 nomination. Congratulations on a well-deserved nomination, Riley!

Also of note, the Garms Family posted their guesses in their first post—and were consistently very close to, tied, or more accurate than my own guesses. Great start, TGF!

2011 Singing News Fan Awards Top Ten Predictions

Join me in welcoming The Garms Family for their first post—with, as requested by a number of us, views from the Lil’ Adventurers, too! – Daniel

Have you all voted for your favorite artists in the Singing News Fan Awards yet?

Sam, Jayme, Caleb, and I (Taylor) sat down together to predict the Singing News Fan Awards Top Ten Nominations, and as you might suspect, it turned into quite a lively conversation with their “little” opinions!

We examined several years of past nominations, considering everyone’s favorites…and we also added our own personal opinions. “I keep thinking Booth Brothers, Booth Brothers, Booth Brothers,” Sam said as we started, and with the Booth Brothers being their favorite trio, all three quickly suggested each member for nomination in applicable categories. 🙂 (They even tried to squeeze Michael Booth into Favorite Female Singer!) All Booth Brothers, Legacy Five, and Greater Vision nominations were unanamious votes. As we went along, the others of the family would also float in and out to add their personal opinion, creating an interesting flavor to the process.

Without further ado, here are our predictions for the ten most interesting 2011 Fan Awards categories!

FAVORITE ARTIST:

  • Booth Brothers
  • Legacy Five
  • Greater Vision
  • Triumphant Quartet
  • The McKameys

  • Ernie Haase and Signature Sound
  • Brian Free and Assurance
  • Gaither Vocal Band

MIXED GROUP:

  • Isaacs
  • Diplomats

Whew, that’s over! After listening to an exuberant 11-year old, nine-year old, and seven-year old excitedly and loudly share their nomination ideas, I think I’ll rest my ears for a while. 🙂
