George Younce

For a few months, George Younce was the Florida Boys’ bass singer. According to group manager Les Beasley, this was in late 1958 and early 1959. Founding bass J.G. Whitfield had left the group in about 1958; after Younce left, Billy Todd took his place (and ended up staying through 1972.) To Les Beasley’s knowledge, Younce made no LP recordings with the group during his time with them; any recordings made with the group would have been singles or radio transcriptions.

After brief stints with the Florida Boys and the Weatherford Quartet, Younce’s first major long-term quartet job was with the Blue Ridge Quartet. The group was originally formed as part of the Stamps organization. Younce sang with this group from the mid-1950s through 1964, when he left to join the Cathedral Quartet. Burl Strevel, who had preceded him in the bass position, came back to fill the vacancy. The group disbanded in the late 1970s after Strevel died of a heart attack.

Younce was born in 1930 and died in 2005.
