I started writing about Southern Gospel in 2006 on SouthernGospelBlog.com, later Southern Gospel Journal. Over the next 8 years, I wrote more than 3,000 daily posts.
By 2014, it was pretty clear that the blogging era was ending. And it was clear that Christian music was changing. When I started, most artists weren’t on social media, and you had to get your news from a website or magazine. By 2014, we’d all started getting our news straight from our favorite artists on social media. And thanks to streaming, we didn’t really need CD reviews anymore to help us decide whether to spend money on a new release. So it seemed like it was the right time to retire the site.
I called it a retirement, but to be honest, I didn’t really know if it was a retirement or an intermission. But I did know that I still loved this music. And I’ve kept listening to it ever since.
These last few years, I’ve become such a fan of the podcasts in our genre – Southern Gospel Podcast, Gold City’s Double Take, Nicholas Wilke’s podcast, Behind the Crown, Southern Gospel Forward, Southern Gospel Now, and others.
I’ve started to think: What if I brought Southern Gospel Journal back, but as a podcast this time? 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of launching this site, and that seems like a good time to bring it back.
I hope to tell the stories of the artists you love and know you want to hear from. I also hope to tell the stories of people who work behind the scenes or have been off the road for long enough that other podcasts might not tell their story. And beyond that? I’m open to ideas. I look forward to seeing what the future holds!
